Akai MPC5000

The MPC line have long been what Akai has been known for, and rightly so many would say. These machines essentially pack a small studio into a solid shiny portable unit. Hardware sampling, MIDI Sequencing, MIDI control of external equipment, and a whole array of nifty drumming and percussion effects that have helped craft some of the worlds most popular hiphop and electronic tracks, as well as finding a place in the hearts of producers of other genres.

It's once again time to welcome the next level of MPC shiny gadgetry to the production scene... the MPC5000.

With each progressive flagship model of MPC, Akai manage to raise the bar, by adding yet more features and increasing memory and other technical specs.

Naturally the MPC5000 is no exception to this, and has managed to get double the LCD screen size of the MPC2500, making it now 240x128. Full waveforms can be shown clearly on this new backlit LCD. The screen is also capable of tilting to whatever angle you'd like, which I'm sure many people will find suits their production seating arrangements, rather than having to always look straight down on the MPC in order to view the details on screen.

Perhaps one of the most exciting new features which the MPC5000 brings to the line for the first time is a 20-voice, 3-oscillator virtual analog synthesizer with arpeggiator, which is quite a move from the rock solid Akai MPC standard feature lineup. The VA synth includes hundreds of presets.

Also sure to create quite a buzz is the addition to the MPC5000 of 8-track streaming hard disk recording, again something which a lot of people will surely react very positively too.

The basis of the MPC5000 hasn't avoided a complete overall either, with the brand new sequencing engine thats been built, with a higher resolution, allowing for greater detail in the MIDI sequences laid down. I notice other details such as a turntable preamp have also been built into the MPC5000.

The core function of the 64-voice drum/phrase sampler comes equipped as standard with 64MB memory - which is expandable up to 192MB.

This is a video of the MPC5000 from NAMM 2008:

This is the official Akai Professional MPC5000 video:

All in all this new beast from Akai is looking pretty dam lovely, though naturally all this hardware packed into a portable unit comes at a price.

I suspect that not only will diehard MPC fans be looking to upgrade, but that the extra additions such as the hardware synth and so on will most probably begin to persuade some others who in the past weren't overly interested in the MPC line of production tools.

On a side note, they also released the MPD32.

Yeah I saw that while looking through the Akai site the other day - from my quick perusal it looks like an even further beefed up version of the MPD16 > MPD24 line... I might have to do a writeup of it too. With all the manufacturers and software companies around in the recording studio industry, it's so easy to miss new things!

Amittai's picture

Yes, very easy. It sucks too. Now I wish my 24 was a 32. lol, whatever... I can worry about more important things I suppose.

Haha yeah, but remember its entirely possible for someone to live their whole life on pause "waiting" for the next big thing ;) With technology nothing ever stops evolving, so you've got to dive in at some point. Sure, pretty soon there will be a smaller, better, faster, stronger one just round the corner, but thats just the good old relentless march of technology.

im hooked....thanks matt...i need to see the price though....that might be the killer....looks like the total package....i wonder if it works with fruity loops...i imagine thats a stupid question but im really not to good with midi....it took me a month to figure out how to get my midi keyboard going

Frank Marquis's picture

$2500.00 is a lot of money to me...maybe one day ill be able to afford it....by then ill want the newer model...lol...anybody now of a cheap tool to do midi with those cool turning knobs that shifts the sound...thats really all i need

matt's picture

Yeah these MPCs are designed as a total package - you don't need FLstudio or any other sequencer for that matter (although you can use them with one if need be). Its got a powerful sequencer, sampler, sample editor, and now synth contained within the one hardware unit. Thus the price :)

Does your current midi keyboard not have any extra midi control knobs/faders?

Frank Marquis's picture

no...i was dumb and bought the kontrol 49....i should have paid the extra money for the sequencer

Frank Marquis's picture

you know i just looked at my keyboard and maybe it does have a sequencer....i really need to explore the features on it....ive just been using it as a piano for the most part....not enough time in the studio...lol

matt's picture

Well the Kontrol49 has those extra knobs/faders as well, so you should be able to map those onto specific controls in your favorite software synth(s) - to do what you were talking about as far as altering the sound while its playing goes...

Frank Marquis's picture

man thats great news...thanks....thats going to have to be my next project

matt's picture

Cool - I've started a forum thread about using the Kontrol49 with Flstudio, so we don't clutter this page with offtopic discussion. If you get stuck, or find out any further info , post in there. I'll post there if I find some good tutorials on the subject as well.
