How to record MIDI controller notes in FLStudio

This is a common question, so I thought I'd post a tutorial video on how to setup your MIDI controller to work with FLstudio. This should apply to either a MIDI keyboard, or MIDI pad controller such as the MPD24 for example.

This tutorial video also covers how to arm your FLstudio session prior to a recording session, so that once you start playing your MIDI controller, the MIDI notes are recorded into a FLstudio MIDI file, which can be left as recorded, or perhaps adjusted or corrected at a later time.

One other thing to remember is that if you don't have an ASIO capable soundcard, you may experience latency. This means there is a noticeable delay between when you press a key on your MIDI controller, and when you hear the note play. This of course can make playing a song, melody, or drum loop virtually impossible, as the timing is all off. If this is the case for you, then you'll want to find out whether your soundcard actually does support ASIO drivers, and get those installed if thats the case. You'll also want to check in your Audio/MIDI FLstudio preferences that the ASIO mode driver is selected, as it's possible that it is an available option, but that you're still using the sluggish default Windows Sound Mapper or other high latency driver.

I hope that helps you get setup to record external MIDI data from your controllers, and get that much more funky with your FLstudio recording sessions! Stay tuned for more FLstudio tutorial videos and guides...

I'd seen this before. THis is for FL 5 or 6. I can't remember which one. But the principle should still be the same. I am gonna try it, thanks Matt.

Ah right, hadn't realized it was an older version of flstudio. I imagine it is pretty similar a process anyhow, let me know!

Yup good point - though many midi controllers only need to be plugged in and powered on, BEFORE you open the program - whether its Reason / FLstudio / Cubase, whatever. Of course if that doesn't work, a good old reboot might just help :)
