Recording audio alongside Reason - Propellerheads Record

It's probably one of the most discussed "missing" features of Propellerheads Reason - the inability to record audio tracks within the program.

Well Propellerheads have now announced their new software package, imaginatively called, "Record".

Record allows the user to, well, record audio tracks, and apply a multitude of effects to them, in a software style and layout that should be very familiar to Reason users. I should clarify at this point, that Record is a standalone program, you don't need to be running Reason as well - though it's likely that many people will choose to run both I would imagine.

Propellerheads Record - Introduction Video

Read more below!

This new studio software is clearly designed with simplicity and ease of use in mind, as demonstrated several times in the introduction video. The resulting outcome may feel somewhat restrictive to home studio users who use any of the numerous existing DAW software packages, but I would guess would be very welcome to many fans of Reason and it's unique workflow. I think this familiar "Reason-like" system could translate into real musical productivity for the right people.

You can read more about the Record software on the Record website.

Propellerheads Record will be available to buy from September 9, 2009 at a suggested retail price of $299 USD / €299 EUR.

Record will also integrate with Reason if you have it installed already.

Here is the technical info for Record for those of you interested in the specs.

What are your thoughts on this new addition to the Propellerheads software line?

cool.... I gotta check that out... theyre in beta test phase for it. i cant wait to mess around with the line6 plugins. from what it looks like its got no vst compatability just like reason though.. I dont understand why they gotta try to make it a extra program.. looks like a add-on or extension.. something they could've hooked everybody up with through a patch.. Hopefully when reason 5 gets released this comes with it automaticly at no extra charge.. all these daw and sequencers companies can learn alot from imageline on how to treat their customers...

Yeah pretty interesting although most Reason users I think who record already have something else to work with. And you can get things cheap or pretty much free with like Temper or Reaper that accept VST. I wonder what Record will have that's worth it apart from the line 6 stuff. Love, Ingrid

Oh this is as good as mine! Goodbye Audition! Hellooooooo Record! They had me at advanced dynamics processing... As long as it has a good compressor, and parmetric EQ like Reason, I'm in! Oh and Teddy, this will integrate Reason and its instruments into it.... not rewire into it. In other words, this is an add-on to Reason, giving you new FX and the ability to record.

Quite interesting, and I can't wait to check it out. I registered as a beta tester but got nothing back from them. Too bad.

I am just wondering why Propellerheads woke up to the fact that Reason users DO ACTUALLY record as well! By now, after so many years, many Reason users are likely already using another DAW where Reason is Rewired into the workflow. Ableton Live is likely the most obvious choice for typical Reason users, but Logic Pro 8 utilises Reason in a very clever way, and it will take a lot to take me away from that workflow.

Is there really a market for ANOTHER recording software package considering all of these facts? The Line 6 integration is probably it's biggest selling point.

Reason never needed to be able to record. Because of Rewire, you could use any DAW of your choice, but since more and more programs are becoming an all in one solution, they pro'lly figured it was time to add a recording suite to their product list. Great thing is if you have Reason, this just adds the Reason instruments and FX to Record, makng it one piece of software.

yeah man i get you ryzl...i always thought it needed a record function.. when i first started using reason i used to plug my guitar in the line in jack on my computer and use windows sound recorder then import the files into a nnxt.. they should really add vst use to this program then i wouldnt need to use live anymore.. . i wonder when they add vst use if itll be sold as a seperate program too.

I read an interview with the makers of Reason where they said they don't want to add vst because it doesn't suit their rack layout, and also introduce instability issues. But I think they should create a rack module that lets you select vst so you can determine the signal path. This admittedly might make a lot of Reason's effects redundant cuz given the choice, I think a lot of people would choose 3rd party vst. The thing is, I think they pretty much do now anyway with whatever rewire host they are using with reason. Love, Ingrid

I just got the beta! Its sick!!! Anyone who wants it, propellerheads gave me two invite codes along with mine. First two people to e-mail me gets 'em! I mean you can apply for an invite, but it takes like 10 days for them to respond. I got invite codes right now! Holla at me if you want 'em!

Damn that looks cool.
No VST :( That's a lil bit of a shame. Reason instruments and effects are good, but they sound like reason. And I reckon those line 6 pod things sound gross!
But the mixer looks sweeeeet! Damn I wanna check that out.

Yeah I got a beta like cap and agree its pretty dam good and works well with reason. The only thing is no vst but if you have other things you can work something out. I use my vst with Cubase or Reaper, so will bounce a track from reason and use it in those. I don't like Rewire typically I find it a bit unstable and resource intensive at times (specially with cubase).

I don think I am in the market for record but nice to play around with it.

I found rewire to be glitchy too, untill I used it in Ableton. It runs a lot smoother in Live than anything else. Records new effects are super crispy! and the Reson effects are great! I don't know what you're talking about! You just gotta know how to use them right. A lot of times you need to layer more than one effect box to get the desired result, and try running stuff thru a line mixer so you can use the aux returns. I tell you, I've been using Reson for almost three years and every time I go in, its like I learn something new. Reason is a lot more powerful then people think. With record and reason, its a monster!

Sure but I do have some fav vsti synths and plugins I like to use. Reason is my number 1 fav system, and great for creativity, but I like the fact I can use other things as well and create a song in both reaon and say cubase. Love, Ingrid

I may try that and just track bounce. having a 4 way with fl adad 3.1 and record and me.
if I only knew the right doctor....

Too little too late...

Dont get me wrong I love reason. It's 90x easier to write the basic structure of a hiphop song in reason than any other music software I've found. But ultimately this isn't why I barely use reason anymore. The biggest reason not to use reason is ITS 16bit... So what good would recording 16bit vocals be.

Well that isn't fair I guess because anyone who uses a USB Mbox or UA is running 16bit. But still after a bit you just cant put up with the lifelessness of 16bit.

And I know what some people are thinking [but I can export at 24bit in reason] This is true however if all the sounds at 16bit you can't make quaility from what isn't there in the first place.

If reason Raised its quality I'd go back to using it. That and if they supported VST plug ins. If those 2 things were met I'd never have a reason to use FL Studio or any other program for hip hop again.

I have been using Record 1.5 and Reason 5 since early December - and it is superior to any other DAW I've used. I only use audio recording, but it allows you to do so much, to tweak so much.... In my books, its a MUST HAVE.
