There are a range of different mastering software options available these days, and one which has remained popular over the last few years is the T-Racks 24 mastering suite.

This "hands on" style of mastering software, with its glowing valves and adjustment dials and gauges has an instant appeal, even as you're learning the basics of using it. In my opinion this makes it quite nice to get familiar with, as it's less of a perceived chore to take the time to try out the various settings and become adept at the range of mastering techniques it offers.
I'm sure there are more advanced mastering software packages available, such as the high end Steinberg Wavelabs suite, but I certainly think that you should at least give T-Racks a try out in your home studio, as it's a popular addition for good reason.
You can download the 10-day T-racks demo from their website.

I've tried a demo of the Wavelabs stuff and it's pretty incomprehensible to me, a steep learning curve perhaps.

Yeah thats what I figured too. As I think I mentioned above, the more "hands on" style of t-racks would appeal to more people I would think, given the dial turning ease of trying the features out.
