The OLPC (One Laptop Per Child) organization has made 8.5GB of free samples available, from a range of sources such as the Berklee College of Music sample archives, music synthesis Majors, and many others. The samples include Sound Effects, Loops, Grooves, Drums, Voices and Instruments, and are 16bit 44.1khz mono WAV files, all normalized.
Lower quality versions of ever file at 22khz and 16khz are also available, though naturally we're interested in the high quality 44.1khz ones.
Their web server got slightly overwhelmed by the response, as they served over 5TB per day for a few days after launching the website - thats 5000GB per day! So now the files are being put into slightly smaller torrent packs in the meantime, while heftier servers are being organized to put the main direct file downloads back online. You can also download the individual sample categories at the moment if you'd rather do that.
-edit- Hmm it looks as if most of the individual sample categories are offline too at the moment, so the main OLPC torrent download seems to be the way to go until they get the dedicated servers back online.
So check out the OLPC samples website and get downloading!

SIIICKK!!!!
you need a bit torrent though, but still, free samples is ill son!!
Yeah I was surprised that more people haven't yet commented about this - its pretty massive for people into building up sample libraries!
But yeah I would imagine that in a few days they should have their new servers online, so all the direct download links work again... but in the meantime the torrent should be going strong. It must have been one hell of a mission for OLPC to organize this many samples from all these different sources, quality check, and sort etc...

I reckon. There *must* be a truckload of good samples throughout that collection, given the numbers involved, and so to the people involved
have anybody downloaded this yet, are there any good organs
i finally got this thing downloaded....as expected there is a lot of crap on it...but man there is a lot of really good stuff in there as well....and you never know when your going to need some of those crap sounds anyways...very much worth the effort on the download...thanks for posting this matt...ive already sent a lot of my friends to it...im also trying to get one of my friends on maketunes....he's really bad about getting on the computer but he's a genius in the studio
Phew good to hear theres some worthwhile samples in that lot! And yeah I hear you on the crappier samples too - sometimes a project might call for the most unlikely samples which you'd usually never use! Cool get your friend involved man

Oh Pitbull the direct zip file links still don't work due to the dedicated server move they mention on that page, but there is the 4.5gb torrent download linked at the top of that OLPC page. Just grab that torrent and you're in business
