Illusive Mind - Lift Me Up

  • Artist: Illusive Mind
  • Title: Lift Me Up
  • Genre: Trance
  • Year: 2007
  • Length: 4:11 minutes (4.96 MB)
  • Format: Stereo 44kHz 165Kbps (VBR)

This is a melodic trance track based on this song by Sonya. It's got very typical features:

Bringing in the beats and then kick and then the bass and then the bassline, introduce parts of the main melody and break it down, bring in the pad chords and then the main melody, reintroduce extended bassline etc.

If you listen to a lot of melodic trance you will always notice these hallmarks and different genres tend to have different structures. It's all about what your ears finds interesting and pleasing.

All that stuff comes with practice, the only thing to worry about is listening for what notes sound in key (or in tune) and which one's don't.

That way when you improvise on the keyboard you'll be able to rattle off some great tunes.

The way I do it is by playing the strings pattern and then keep changing the notes in the melody until it sounds right, for example.

Yeah, there are so many ways to input notes for a melody. I usually jam out on the midi keyboard while recording, and then do some edits with the point and click approach... Drawing in additional notes and such with the pencil tool... Then there is also the matrix sequencer (reason), piano roll (FL), and other sequencing things like that... Or you could pick out like 16 notes that are in the same key, program them to different pads on a 16 pad controller (like an MPD 24) and then you wont ever hit a bad note while making a melody...

Nice track Illusive...! Those synths at the top of the track that come back later on are cool, different... Reminds me of a flute, or a piccolo.

Neat little track Illusive - sounds like you had a lot of fun (re)creating this one eh

Haha, that's a neat trick with the MPD 24, Amittai. I very rarely record straight from the keyboard because I'm a pretty lousy player. But you can't beat actually seeing the keys when coming up with chords and what not. So I'll usually improvise on there and then if I find anything good I'll reconstruct it in the piano roll.

Quite often though I'll edit straight in the piano roll where you can see that a fifth will work here or that lead will work with this bassline etc.

Good pick about the flute synths, we tend to associate certain sounds from synths with real instruments, brassy and guitar like for example. Sonya chose those ones and I didn't change em.

I'm busy trying to make my album tracks perfect, so doing little simple ones like this is actually a lot of fun.
