Josh Blair - In Then Out

  • Artist: J. Blair
  • Title: In Then Out
  • Length: 3:22 minutes (3.09 MB)
  • Format: Stereo 44kHz 128Kbps (CBR)

I ran this session by myself including setting up all the mics, the SSL 4000 G+ recording console, and Pro Tools. So far there is only acoustic guitar, drums and vocals. In a few weeks we have another session to record bass, fiddle and electric guitar in addition to what you hear now. I did a quick mix on this so I could let y'all hear it.

Written and performed by Josh Blair (vocals and guitar)
Dusty Wilson on drums
Engineer/Producer - Joey Spinelli
Recorded 9-14-08

Beautiful engineering! Have you discovered a new "Violent Femmes"? This is very well recorded. That little intro sounded like some medeski, martin and wood song I heard on 88.5 here in ATL a while back. i think it was a live in-the-studio version of "Nocturn"
Tell your boy I said his voice is a refreshing sip of cool water amidst the endless sea of salty mediocrity.

Wow. I'll tell him. I think you hit the nail with that Violent Femmes reference. I was thinking maybe the beatles or nirvana, but I couldn't put my finger on the familiar sound. That's it, the Violent Femmes. Thanks for working that out for me!

What this song needs is some serious editing... for timing.

DarkZephyr23's picture

Catchy tune guys!!! Great job, it's awesome!!! I agree with Cap. Timing doesn't need that much work bro. It sounds pretty fluid to me, a couple slips here and there but all in all a pretty awesome track.

Music knows no bounds

Yeah, definitely Nirvana with the guitar style, and the vocalist perhaps slips into a System of the Down style. Are you gonna keep the beginning 'practice' bit in the finalized version? Yeah the timing is off on the drums slightly near the end especially. Still pretty fluid though. You being the engineer had nothing to do with the timing portion. Well done Amittai, and give the guys some props from The Sole okay?

Amittai's picture

Sure thing bro. I can't decide whether or not to leave that intro part there, so I'm leaving it unitl I make up my mind... Still got time - gotta track some fiddle, bass, and elec guitar then we'll see how it turns out.

I'm almost done with the timing editing I was talking about. This will be one of my portfolio pieces, and I don't want the panel asking why I didn't edit the tempo issues to a click... So I'm just playing it safe. The way it sounds without the edits is cool, but a little too much like a live performance where it's okay... But a professional recording is supposed to be perfect, and that's what I'm learning how to do... Commercial sound.

Amittai's picture

I just re-uploaded this track with like several thousand edits... Check it out now, the timing is on and I think it flows much better than before. This is why labels hire professional musicians for the studio, so they don't have to edit soooo much shit.

It all sounds good bro! TIming sounds right too! Props!

Great recording skillz, I can only guess how much work you put in setting it all up and cant wait for the remastered version!

Amittai's picture

Yo thanks KD and Pit!

KD, I used lots of mics... Here we go: an AKG D112 on the kick drum, a Shure SM57 on the snare, a Sennheiser MD421 on each tom, two AKG C414B XL II's for left and right overheads, and a Blue Baby Bottle as a room mic for extra ambience. On the guitar I used both a Shure SM57 and a Neumann U87Ai for a stereo signal. On the vocals I used the Blue Baby Bottle and the AKG C414B XL II... During the vocal recording I also placed an extra C414 under the snare drum pointed up so when Josh sang the snare would breath along with it... That's the secret ingredient here (i left the drums up and tracked the vocal recordings in the same room with them.).

like i said Amittiai even after hearing all that i still couldnt record a whole band lol, great job bro again

either way I'll probably send u back the instrumental as a whole so you can hear it..

I just read the mics you used... Them shure mics are some bad mother shut-yo-mouths. They make great kick mics as well. I was just surprised that you didn't use ribbon mics for vocals... I figured AI ATL would have a few lying around... The best quality vocals I ever heard were from Cascade ribbon mics. (Either a C77 or a Fat Head II... they both sound ridiculously awesome! Decently priced at about $500... for a studio qual ribbon mic, that's a great price) Nice trick with the snare I might add. Never thought about that.

Good point Cap! I have no excuse for that. I liked the snare trick too, but I wish I had used it with the guitar tracks instead of the vocal... It's wierd when the snare sound only comes in with the vocals and then drops out.

Amittai's picture

Yo MarCoast Beats-

What do you need? Separate wavs from the multitrack?

MarCoast Beats.'s picture

yea that's perfect, if you can put it all in one zip, that'll be great

Okay. Do you use a mac? Cause I do, but I'm not sure if I've ever made a zip on a mac. If u don't know how, I'll just do it on the pc at my work... No prob.

MarCoast Beats.'s picture

no i don't have a mac, but here's something i googled that'll help..

NEW REMIX!!

Also... you might need StuffIt Expander on the mac to get the files to read on the Windows system... I just read that a few times in the past. It might not be the case. I open ALL mac files with MacDisk It's just a trial, but if you only need it only once, it does the damn thing! Just uninstall it after you're done. You technically remove its entries from the Win registry, and reinstall every ten days (to reset the trial period), but that's annoying, and kinda risky, in my book. Just my thoughts.
