A Great Illusion (WIP Preview)

  • Artist: Illusive Mind
  • Title: The Great Illusion
  • Year: 2007
  • Length: 0:45 minutes (1.03 MB)
  • Format: Stereo 44kHz 192Kbps (CBR)

So I was playing on the Casio keyboard last night and came up with this melody as the basis for a trance song.

I'm wondering if anyone can offer an interesting idea for a title? Picking titles for non-lyrical melodic songs is usually a pretty random affair!

Update: I found a sample I really liked so the search is over!

Well from what little I've heard, so far of this track, and knowing what you're capable of, then it should be awesome!

Coolboy in the mix.

illusivemind's picture

Thanks coolboy, no pressure of anything! lol.

I love finding little progressions like this when improvising.

illusivemind's picture

Thanks Eugod,

This track is on backburner at the moment I found a nice chord I liked and am turning it into a nice chilled song.

Here is the chilled song I was referring to!

I found a sample I really like, so the search for a title, which is actually equivalent to the search for meaning, can cease.

Quite the moody piano piece there - I'll be looking out for the track in its entirety.

illusivemind's picture

I'll brighten it a little for ya!
Here's a morsel more, I might finish this monster this weekend.

"Echoes From The Past". Fitting because of the reverb and I know you said the title searching could cease but it came to me and I hadn't heard this one yet. Or 'Echoes From a Ceased Creation' since it is on a back burner. Both are rockin titles. If you don't use one of my title offerings I just might. ;0)

Oh, really nice by the way. You got some mad skilz cuz.

Thanks bro, very evocative titles. It's fitting for the piano piece but once you hear the finished product you'll hear the 'hardness'.

Unfortunately my PC crapped itself when I attempted to install a RAID controller this weekend and now freezes before I can get into Windows so I'll have fun running diagnostics on that tonight. :(

matt's picture

Ah yes - RAID can be a bundle of fun alright... a couple of years ago while obsessing over pc speed I setup my system as RAID-0 (fast but total lack of data safety).

The other day I saw RAID-0 described as like driving down the freeway straddling 2 cars, with one leg in the window of each car... if either car has issues, its all over! ;)

illusivemind's picture

Haha, the sad thing is, I wasn't even trying to set up a RAID, I needed the sata controller to plug in my new 500GB sata drive, my motherboard is from the pre-sata industral age in the land of IDE.

I don't think I could spare the memory or the dosh$ to do anything but a RAID-0, are people really experiencing hard drive failure that regularly? It's not like we're running some business server that needs to be backed up and online 24/7 right?

Ah I see - yeah those new SATA drives are where its at. In my opinion the new generation SATA drives have done away with the need for consumers to use RAID for performance gain. Especially with some of the 10,000rpm SATA drives around!

Regarding the HDD failure rate - I would have to say "yes" :) Sure its not a constant thing, but I've had a HDD fail in the past, and I know several friends who've also had their HDDs bite the dust... usually on fairly old drives, but not always. With the price of HDDs these days, I think the best option would be to mirror 2 x 500GB drives ;) Give ya plenty of space, and the security of your 500GB of data.

illusivemind's picture

I hear that. I have had a hard drive fail on me once, back when I knew nothing about computers and got this store bought piece of crap from a company that disappeared by the next tax season (very useful warranty). I still laugh now recalling the brand name of that particular drive, the Quantum Fireball!

I have four external drives so I keep copies of irreplacable stuff across them all. That's probably why a RAID seems like overkill to me.

matt's picture

Oh hell yeah sounds like you've got a very secure system anyway without RAID.

I think I had one of those quantum fireballs back in the day too! And I'm pretty sure it crapped itself

illusivemind's picture

Yeah it's getting old now in computer years. I was using a widescreep HP Laptop with Vista last night and got a hit of the green eyed monster.

I wonder if anyone on here is using Vista on their DAW? Still seems to early to me. I don't think I could bring myself to fall into the Microsoft trap of keeping the hardware industry in business by buying a new machine until something actually breaks on this one or some critical piece of newhardware (like say a super fast modem (dream on)) was incompatibile with it.

The Sole's picture

Well boys you are talking my lingo now. Just for the record ... Quantum Fireball is much much better a beast then Maxtor. I work for Dell remember and that is what we replace the most of. Also I have been using Vista Home Premium for several months now and everything works on it... including all of my computer games. It is great.
IM? Why don't you just make you ghost image backups of your stuff. Better to have on disk then a hdd. Buy the way, the fixed drives are newer technology then the sata drives and wont go bad nearly as much because the sectors used each time during a reload or whatnot change and the data isn't always going to the same damn block locations. The NEWEST technology though... get this: has insect protein involved in the making of them. I heard some techs talking about that new technology. That is some scary shit there. Then the thought of having bugs in your system doesn't necessarily mean a virus. LOL. I wonder if Pest Patrol is going to have a field day on that note!

illusivemind's picture

That's cool Sole. Good to know Vista is working for you, I'd have to be dead certain that my Delta1010 for example would have compatible drivers first.

I've backed up to cd & dvd in the past but it never happens as regularly as just copying some folders across the HDD's. I've had dvd's crap themselves much more often.

What are the fixed drives?

The Sole's picture

Well there is over 3 gig of drivers that come with WIndows vista. You are probably safe. Besides, you can always go to the manufacturers website to download the drivers if you had to right?

My Showcase

matt's picture

Yeah a bunch of the musicians software/hardware manufacturers took a long time to get their stuff working with Vista, but from what I hear most of it is now working ok.

illusivemind's picture

Nope, there isn't even beta drivers for any of the Delta line yet. :(

In Development:
Delta 1010
Delta 1010lt
Delta 66
Delta 44
Delta Audiophile 192
Delta Audiophile 24/96

Doh! I know several of the main manufacturers have sorted their lines anyway - I guess not everyone is quite there yet!

The Sole's picture

Oh draught IM... you shoulda got a Dell.... LOL! Nah, just kidding. The Dell drivers aren't on it either, they come on a separate disk. My Vista was a factory installation though. OEM version shipped with system=less headache. Just go to drivers.com and see if they got those ones sorted and ready and waiting. You have a Delta? I have never heard of that company before. Look Vista is more flashy and from what I can tell, that is about it. Mayhaps it is too much effort. My Showcase

matt's picture

Its M-Audio that make the Delta line of audio interfaces that Illusive and I have. They're great cards - I haven't used other M-Audio lines such as their keyboards etc, but their core has always been audio interfaces for musicians, so thats solid.

I'm probably going to stick with XP Pro for a while yet, don't see any real reason to upgrade in near future for me.

illusivemind's picture

Me too. Wait for the prices to drop etc.

I'll never forgot the time I bought a CD burner for the first time, $300. Within four months prices dropped at least 60%. Why? Because the new range of DVD burners started coming out (like $800 for a 1x).

Yeah progress marches on ;) Especially in tech, its relentless. Still, I wouldn't have it any other way - after all its just this progression which enables all of us to reasonably easily get started with our home studios.

Ceaseless advances in Technology, we salute you. ;)

I'll have them both then ;)

Coolboy in the mix.
