This is my entry for the old school hiphop contest. Had a lot of fun making this one tonight. Its still kinda raw, but I wanted to leave it like that, rather than risk losing the vibe of the track that began to emerge after I had been working on it for a while.
To set the scene... this track to me is all about a dim hazy smoke filled bar (think blues club), with plenty of bourbon and reflection on the past/future... and a mix of good vibes, and soul...

THat was definitely different MAtt. Very bluesy indeed. The track had a nice 'record' feel to it. and yet there WAS a modern day vibe as well. Props!

Thanks heaps guys. Yeah Frank I had some fun adding some real character to the track with those little sounds and whatnot. I wanted to add to the whole dim blues club feel, and I think it worked out ok

Precise - thanks dude, thats exactly what I was going for.
Ed - yeah I like a bit of piano with my hip to the hop. :) I used the excellent NI Electrik Piano over the top of the chopped up samples to play the melodies I wanted to use. Seemed to fit quite nicely alongside the sampled stuff
Giechi - cool, I'll check that out. This contest is instrumental only, but as I had nothing to do with deciding to put lyrics over it, presumably I'm still ok for the contest with my original version here.

I feel like I need to stop shaving for a few days and get all grizzled lookin, so as to fit the blues club scene. Maybe change my name to Old Smokey and start gargling gravel to fit in with my new buddies ;)

About the vocals, it probably won't be done until after the contest ends.. But if I finish before the contest is over I'll wait to upload it.
I believe that would coincide with the competition regulations. I've been waiting for another hip hop contest, so I'll probably be working on a beat for that before I do these vocs.
