Feedback Forum!

As this tight-knit community has grown, it's been a real treat to meet all these great inspiring musicians from around the globe, and hear the non stop new tunes uploaded by everybody. I'm sure most of you here feel the same way about what we've got here. I regularly get a lot of emails thanking me for creating MakeTunes, and as I tell people, you're more than welcome - I'm happy to have enabled this to come about, and I'm in for the long run. I'm not about to stop now (or anytime in the foreseeable future for that matter)!
However, hosting many thousands of songs is not cheap. I don't want to swamp you guys in advertising, so while that can offset my expenses a little, I'm still putting more than USD$1100 a year into keeping this site running.
I've been trying to conserve storage space for as long as possible, but as you know, the music uploads never stop coming. This is a good thing of course - it's what MakeTunes is all about. But naturally storage space requirements keep going up, and now the time has come to buy a whole bunch more music hosting space to allow MakeTunes to continue to have songs added to the site.
This will cost me an *additional* USD$500 per year for this upgrade. Taking my MakeTunes expenses to a rather daunting USD$1600 per year. I just don't have that available in my current situation.
I thought long and hard about whether to post this or not, but I decided in the end that you guys, the MakeTunes community, would understand if I explained the situation and put forward the suggestion of donations to go directly to purchasing the required extra music storage space.
If anyone is able to donate $5 or more, it would be hugely appreciated, and if you'd like, I will list all of the contributing members and ensure that you get the props you deserve for helping MakeTunes in it's hour of need!!
Progress : 60% ($300 donated)
Please join me in thanking those who have donated to the MakeTunes cause so far!
Below is the paypal donation button. Thanks!
When you click the Donate button, you'll be taken to my PayPal donations page. Paypal take a flat-fee of $0.30 + 2.9% of amount from every payment, which is why I mention the $5 or more amount. If you were to donate $1, MakeTunes would only receive $0.67, so it makes sense to donate a few dollars more, less regularly if need be, if you can - as a much higher percentage of your donation will get to MakeTunes.
I'm certainly not asking for stacks of cash here - even if you can only spare $5, it will help MakeTunes keep growing. Just wanted to pass the hat around and see if you guys are willing to help out with some loose change :)
Thanks,
Matt

Well Amittai has been good enough to donate the first $20 - thanks a lot man!
Unfortunately the little Chipin Widget donations progress indicator isn't updating for some reason at the moment, but I've contacted them, and hopefully that will be fixed soon.
I'll be deciding soon just how to post about the contributing members, to thank them for their help with keeping MakeTunes going! But rest assured those who donate will not go un-thanked :)
i left 40 dollas but its on check not sure how long that will take
Thank you very much Ed! Yeah I think it said the check will take 4 days to clear, but its all good - much appreciated man!
And to the other people who have donated so far too - you've directly helped maketunes and I'm stoked to see people stepping up to help the cause.
So far we've had generous donations from these maketunes members
Amittai
Ed
Audiohead
J.B. (not sure of your username, if you've a member?)
Thanks Julian Angel for donating too!
Thanks go to Giechi Dan Productions for his donation too!
Keep them coming people, every dollar you donate is going to reinforce maketunes, so our community can continue to grow, and the tunes can continue to flow.
I thank you all for your support. It means a lot to me.
Cheers Mike_S for your donation as well!
And thank you also to Bill for your donation!
hey bro im keen to help but is there a way to contribute without a credit card?
Cool MB, at the moment its only really possible through Paypal, but I think you can sign up for a free paypal account, enter your bank account number into paypal, and then use that to charge up your paypal account with however many dollars you want? Then you can use your paypal account online like a credit card equivalent? Pretty sure thats what I did before I got a CC.
Hey Matt,
Have you thought about sending an email to members who have no recent activity for say twelve months and then deleting their accounts if you get no response after say two weeks?

Cool thanks for the donation Illusivemind, we're really starting to make some progress on the fundraiser now!
Yeah I have considered something along the lines of removal of totally inactive accounts, though generally speaking its pretty rare for someone to have a large number of uploads and not at least check in every so often, so I don't know that it would make much of a dent. I guess that while the costs are getting higher, the continued growth of maketunes is the name of the game after all. The absolute last thing I want to do is stifle freedom to create and share (and continue sharing) great original tunes. But yeah I hear what you're saying, and certainly I'm less likely to sit idly by if I see an account which is blatantly spammy or otherwise abusing the concept of our community.
Mmm yeah, you're right.
Well most of us are only really interested in getting feedback on our latest tracks, it might make sense to limit music uploads to say ten slots and offer more slots for a small fee.
It would be a big shift, but as MakeTunes grows the economics has to make sense or you will just be saddled with bigger costs. I think you've already been incredibly generous.

Yup that might one day have to be the case... in the meantime I'd like to keep things as open ended as possible, and encourage community numbers to keep growing. Maybe I should add a little reminder that appears every few days, and reminds people to tell someone about maketunes :)
I wonder... maybe the user points could be factored in somehow. Perhaps if you could earn points by posting in the forums, posting comments etc, but you have to spend points to upload a song. That would reward forum/commenting activity and helpful people, while limiting uploads of those who never bother to get involved in the community...
One thing which I would like to encourage the use of is the forums, as obviously they don't take up virtually any space compared to the tunes, but act as a very useful knowledgebase, and also a nice drawcard for new search visitors - many of whom will go on to become members... its tricky, because naturally a lot of the conversation ends up happening on the audio pages comments - and there are many thousands more of them than forum pages. Of course thats perfectly acceptable - its the primary place for community/feedback/ideas/advice/inspiration here at maketunes I think. But all the same, I'd like to somehow help encourage increased use of the forums too.
In any case, keep those donations coming people! You can directly help MakeTunes right now!
Remember, once we hit the target amount, I'll be posting a writeup about all the members who have contributed as further thanks, whether its a large donation or a modest one, it all helps.
If you can't afford to chip in, then please tell your offline/online friends about maketunes.com :) Spread the good word!
Thanks go to maoribeats for his donation!
Matt I'd love to help out (of course my cash flow is mighty low, hey every little bit helps) so other than a credit card how would I slip you a few bucks?
ill no no no fees it would put me out and I love it here....but we do have to do our share when needed but I believe it would scare off people having fees and such.....
I tell people about this site all the time and I at lest got one, Brother Jon, to put some music up I may have convinced another friend to put some of her hip hop up too. Her name is Tamisha but her handle is Scammer T.....if she don't pop up soon I'll remind her again..... I think a few others may have signed up to hear the tunes..... and I'll keep spreading the word.....
maybe some ad banners might help (I know everybody does it but it seems to work selling advertising space) just an idea...... my problem is I have no credit cards, hell I don't even have a bank account and I'm on disability so I don't make much but if there's some way I could send you $5 I will.....let me know if it's possible.....
Yeah Rev I'm not thinking about adding compulsory fees... purely asking for voluntary donations to help out.
Getting some advertisers on board is another option, though usually a pretty difficult road - there are so many mega sites of all sorts around these days. But yes I might just have to look into that some more.
Not really any easy way to donate other than paypal/credit card at the moment unfortunately.
yea I know what you mean about advertising it can be a bitch finding and keeping clientele but it's an idea as I said.....but let me say you're doing a great job with this site....I really enjoy being here and all.......thanks Matt (and the rest of the gang that help out and or post thier songs here....) give everyone a great big hand "clap, clap, clap....." lol
Yeah Rev for sure :) Cheers
Thanks go to IngridTornado as well, for her donation!
Thank you Geomatic for your donation! We're past the 40% mark now people, please help out if you can!
yea matt if i can get a paypal ill definitely contribute to the cause....
but as far as the forums, i agree that they should be used more, especially on the broad subject of music production that are already categorized in the forums.. and in addition to those categories, as a suggestion, i believe there should be some for each of the mainly used software/hardware that is being used(for example: reason, cubase, fl studio, keyboards, and other popular controllers).
and not just that, the site will be more useful to people who surf the web on their phones, like me, who want to keep in touch with the site on the go... (i have a t mobile dash)
just a thought... =D

Hey thanks man, anything you can donate will be a big help.
I'm a little wary of creating more forum categories at the moment, as I thought it might mean having a bunch of pretty quiet sub-forums? But as they get busier on particular topics, it would be something I'll think about doing.
I haven't browsed websites on a phone before - does maketunes work on your phone? :)
Hey Toogoodtobetrue guess what? I am in training for 6 weeks to become a T Mobile Technical Care Specialist! Cool huh?
