Expression

The thing I like the most about home recording is the amount of styles and twist you can put into a track. Art is all about expression, but for some reason when it comes to music this form of art has a hidden set of rules. Most of these rules are unspoken and implemented by the “record industry”, but it is sad when the bulk of society actually judges musicians by these rules. Why are other forms of art not under such scrutiny? We need rules in everything but who sets these rules? After years of taking advice from various sources, some of which are contradictive, I began to just not listen when it comes to certain “tips”. I’ve been told, do not do the rap style and do the dancehall style and everything else in between. I basically just stop listening and started slapping together styles in a way I would like hear them: in the club, driving in the car and fuck it, even the crap played over the PA at work. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not trying to say I’m walking around like my shit don’t stink, I just march to my own drum from time to time. Mastering a track, yeah it does take years of experience, but if I wanted more reverb in on this instrument I’m going to do it. If I want my back ups lower then usual or even set at a frequency that’s abnormal, I’m going to do it. When a track is played back, as long as it sounds great to the creators, it shouldn’t really matter what anyone else’s opinion reflects. I’m still a long way away from my tracks sounding the way they do in my head, but I’m still new to this, so who cares…it will come in time. Besides, you will never know how the music is supposed to sound and you’ll never know my mistakes unless I point them out.
