Akai Mpd24 problem working with Reason 4.0 Please Help!!!

I just got a Mpd24 and am trying to get it to work with the Reason 4.0. I have it hooked up and recognized. However, I can only hear audio for the first track of the beat. Whenever I try to add a track to the beat there is no audio coming out. Please help!

Ok so, let me just get this sorted - you've got the MPD hooked up, and you can trigger your redrum etc ok with it? You're recording a midi track in Reason, of you playing the drum track etc? Then you're trying to add a second midi track, to record another track over the top, and suddenly you're not hearing EITHER the new track, or the original track on playback?

When I try and add a second midi track, to record over the top i can only hear the original track on playback. I can't even hear the sounds when I press the pads on the second midi track although on my computer screen it shows that I am hitting the pads. When I click back to the first midi track everything works fine for the FIRST track. I already checked and the second midi track is not on mute. The same goes if I try and make a third or fourth track. Only the First one plays any audio.

Ah right gotcha. Sounds like you need to check over your MIDI preferences? Any chance you could post a screenshot of your Reason MIDI preferences screen?

Also, after you've created a new MIDI track, I think you might have to click on your Redrum to select it again from memory? Think theres a way round that, but I'm pretty sure by default thats how it works? Been ages since I worked with it so I can't quite remember how I went about setting it up...

Oh - when you do as you described, and create a second midi track, and you can't hear the audio etc - does it still actually record notes that you can see on the 2nd midi track (despite not being able to hear them)?

Ya it still records the notes on the 2nd midi track but I can't hear them on playback. Only the notes from the first midi track

Oh yeah, meant to reply to this one yesterday too. You know nothing about that Reason midi setup looks to me like it would be causing this problem to me. Presumably you've tried both of the Master Keyboard Input options?

I don't think it would be effecting it, but selecting USB DEVICE as the midi output wouldn't be doing anything would it? As the MPD24 is for midi input only.

Just out of curiosity, does enabling all the of BUSes change the behavior at all? I wouldn't think so, but worth a shot if you haven't already tried it.

Also, does Redrum still have the option for "Channel 8 & 9 only"? Could that be playing a part if you have it ticked?

Some other people here must be using Reason 4.0 - hopefully they'll see this post and give you some tips too, as I haven't heard of this issue before

Hey doct0rfunk15, do your MPD24 MMC controls (play/stop/rec etc) work in Reason?

doct0rfunk15's picture

Enabling all the BUSes doesnt do anything... only the first track opened works..the Redrum channel 8 and 9 only are turned off...

And ya my play/stop/rec all works... everything seems to be fine expect I just cant get sound out of any of the tracks besides the first one

Ah nuts. Reason 4.0 users, we need your help to get this figured out!!

I just don't know what else to suggest, as I don't have it here to try out myself.

hi when your recording your audio did you press new dub , or new alt ?

you wouldnt hear the sound with new alt but you would with new dub.

when i create a new track i dont press alt

have you tried routing each sound from the redrum to a different channel in the mixer?

If you could take a screen shot of the back of the rack I think I could help. Your control preferences screen looks right and having it set to master controller is the key. This way when you go to the sequencer screen you just click on the appropriate icon instrument to the left and it should have a RED outline. Then hit some pads and the keys of the icon should light up green, signifing the MPD is controlling that device.

I had some issues with creating new devices and Reason would automatically hook it up to other instruments, thus making the new instrument nothing but an effect device. So if you could post a screen shot of the BACK OF THE RACK that would be great. just go to OPTIONS......TOGGLE RACK FRONT/REAR.

even when i connect it to the second track it says its connected but not available

OK!!! Got IT!
1st thing is that you get the first insrument to play because it is in the hardware chanel 1 input, the harware device is for your sound card so you can hear REASON. THIS IS NOT A MIXER! Notice where you have the DR REX hooked up, the lights next to it are RED. That is because REASON knows you only have one sound card for it to talk to so to speak.

OK. I will try to make this short and sweet so you can start rockin.

Start a new REASON EMPTY RACK. It should show ONLY the hardware device. Go to CREATE and select the MIXER 14:2. This is your actual mixing board. Next go to CREATE again and select your REDRUM. REASON will automatically connect it to chanel one on the mixer. Next go to CREATE and select DR. REX. It will automatically plug in to the mixer in chanel two. Keep doing this until you have your desired instruments. Now you should hear music from all instruments.

Now if you don't want to do this every time, you can save a default studio of instruments you use, so that when you open REASON it will auto load YOUR specific studio. Just save your studio under file as whatever you wanna call it ( i.e. DOCTOR FUNKS SHOP or whatever)
Next go to edit and click GENERAL at the top and look for DEFAULT SONG. click the folder and select your saved studio. That's it.

If you have anymore questions just post them here and I will check back with ya!
