cd baby & co.

Hi everyone in this whole wide world...

Would you like to discuss some ways of selling your cds (really, just the hard-copy records)?

Can you recommend some good outlets for independent artists?

Some worries I have is because of the annual fees or signup fees some distributors charge. So maybe we could list a few services and tell if those basic fees are paying off. After all it comes down to how our fans accept those services and make use of them.

I am currently making a really good experience with cdbaby.com as the one-time signup fee of $ 35 has paid off well.

Okay, maybe we can all discover some new ways to get our music out there...

Hi itnocab,

I think cd baby is cool, as it offers an easy way for everyone to buy your cd (and downloads too). cd baby has established itself as a trustworthy brand and so your fans will feel safe ordering through their website.

It seems there are also many fans literally searching for new music on cd baby. You can select a genre and a subgenre for your music (and change it any time you like) plus you can name up to three "sound-like" artists. These are quite good options for people to find you there just by browsing the sites.

cd baby provides you with stats about how many people visited your sales site and what other website they had been referred from. So you will have a good overview on which links and style descriptions work best and where some improvement is neccessary.

Payments go out every Monday if they have reached USD 20.00 to any American bank account or internationally via paypal. I have found that cd baby is very reliable as payments are concerned.

Another major plus is that cd baby creates a list in your account with the contact information of all the people who bought your cd, so you can get in contact with them and thank them or ask them to join your mailing list etc.

Yet another plus: cd baby gets both your cds and your mp3s (if you like, mp3 distribution is at no additional cost) out to several retail stores where your cd can be orderd or downloaded (including cd universe, cd connection, iTunes, napster, Rhapsody, payplay and lots more...).

You set the price for your cds and downloads (and change it anytime, so you can make a weekend sale or whatever), cd baby always keeps USD 4.00 per sale.
As for mp3 distribution, cdbaby takes 9% off off iTunes´, napster´s etc. sales prices and gives the rest to you. These payments are not proceeded every Monday, they depend on how these services pay cd baby (probably on a 1/4 annual basis or so...).

All this is included in the one-time setup fee of USD 35.00 per album. For an additional 20.00 (as far as I remember now) they will create a real UPC barcode for your record, so your sales will be reported to soundscan and your cd looks really professional...

I hope this can be of help for you.

Could you please tell if that amiestreet.com thing is paying off?

Let's see..... Amiestreet is easily my Favorite Website right now.As for paying off, that's a different story. In marketing my music I've found that's only done by Marketing the site itself. This hasn't been going all that well.
Like the things you mentioned on other sites, they provide some decent feedback concerning daily plays, page hits and sales, the curve on tracks is balanced between popularity and price and that's the only real sticking point. When you first upload, there's no charge, instead a $5.oo back charge storage fee, then there's the 12 free mp3 downloads they give to listeners before the track is priced at.09 cents only rising in price as demand or purchases do.......Some music does well, seems my genre isn't one of them but all my freebies are gone and I have sold some mp3's but compared to the storage of my mp3's I'll really have to come up with better marketing if I'm ever gonna see Royalties from them(i.e actual payments........
