Collaborative Releases / Physical Media

Has anyone here had experience with collaborative releases for promotional purposes? I tried to put an album together about a year ago, but it was like pulling teeth to get the artists to submit any music, much less commit to splitting the costs of an album run, so eventually I let go of that idea.

Sometimes I think that physical media might be past its prime, anyway, since things seem to be heading in a download oriented, instant-gratification direction with music. What do you think?

I'd tend to agree that the download approach will usually be a LOT easier to get off the ground, but I would still think that a download wouldn't get the potential kudos that a professional CD used as a promotion item could...

Another aspect is that given the numbers of people involved in making music these days, it naturally would be difficult to pinpoint those individuals who have the motivation and business mentality to see a full on collab release through... still doable, but difficult I'd guess.

I blame the *insert blamable item here* ;)

Dam apathetic generation - if I could be bothered I'd do something about it!!! ;)

Physical releases would certainly be more 'real' but yes probably also quite old hat.

What isn't old hat is the marketing that usually accompanies said CD releases, usually that is the key ingredient that seperates 'known' from 'unknown'.

Guys, I gotta disagree. I 've been reading only a little on it but my understanding is that Physical media still holds 85% of all music purchased. That;s tough to compete with...Yes The marketing has much to do with it. Most def. But I think People like to have a physical item they can touch to associate their purchase and money spent. I don't know about you guys But I love my shelf. Even Though I rarely touch it ,but to put something new on it. Just having it there Ya know.I love making music, but when I burn that homemade and print the label, It's whole other feeling in my hand

Oh and Matt..that was funny...

I believe we'll all have to remember to approach this part of music from a listeners perspective. That's the key.(what would 50 Cent Do???)

Before albums existed, there was the single record with a B side. Before the single there was only sheet music. YES!!!! in the early 1900s and before, musicians would hit the charts by selling sheet music as media. The only way people could hear an artist then (besides seeing them in person) was to buy the sheet music and play it on their own piano, or trumpet, or whatever... When we figured out how to make a phonorecord, sheet music sales went way down. When the radio came out, phonorecord sales went way down. So on and so fourth.
So where are we now? Just as every other music media has become outdated, so will the CD Release. Musicians will have to think of something more clever to release. IE: CDs with dvd bonus material on the flip side... Contract with new video games to release an album in the form of the entire sound track for the game... Contract with a movie to release an album to be used as the entire soundtrack...

Sorry my fellow musicians, but we are being forced to be even more creative now... If we want our work to sell...

Creative approaches are the best ones, anyway. There are some really impressive things going in the world of viral marketing (there are also some really mediocre/bad/boring/weak efforts, too).

Most of the work that I've released as brokenkites so far is connected to a work of metafiction; the two are intended to be able to stand alone, but also supplement each other. A couple of the videos that I put together are kind of like bridges for the two different works.

I'd like to see more stuff showing up where video directors/producers use thematic music from independent artists, and tie it in with story from indie authors. A series of short films/videos that are thematically arranged to tell a bigger story would be really cool. Anyone know of anything like that going on?

And, of course, if the site collectively decides to release a physical CD, I'd want to sign up for that. haha

We are islands.

I believe We could release something Of impact if we market it correctly. BUZZ is vital. You kind of have to be a snake oil salesman to in a way.I've been Play with a few ideas and it's not easy alone But better in a Group. I believe our individual chances at success are are greater if we bring the worlds attention to this community, but how is the question.
I long for the days When elite level mebers of maketunes.com collaborate over the Net on the new Tom Cruise film And the only issues are weekly newsletters.

Maybe we should start a deconstruction forum where we can pick a widely accepted commercial success and recreate the aural elements to show our veracity. It may sound lame but remixing the bkrnd music and soundtrack or replacing of a major work is a strong display of working together. I believe we have the technology to collectively fill a cue sheet and collaborate on final prod. Those type of efforts are noticed and create BUZZZZZ

We need a project that will band these 'islands' together to create our own 'water world'(sorry for the pun...
