Composing w/ without lyrics or vocals.

What's up guys. Just wanted to see if I could get a little feedback about how you compose your tracks here on maketunes. Meaning do you just compose your music and just let it sort of evolve into what the finish product ends up being? Do you try to create a certain type of feel or attitude with the track. Do you ever compose a track with areas for vocals or lyrics. Part of my reasoning for asking this question is because many of times certain tracks sound repetitive or a little lifeless with lyrics or vocals. Especially my own, that's why I mostly do remixes with my music. is there a formula for just creating music with a life of it's on? Alot of you guys create great tracks filled with emotions from anger, sorrow, happiness etc.... Peace and keep making those hitz !! On the hottest and most diverse site around !!!

If I'm even remotely planing on having vocals on a track I put it into what I refer to as 8-Bar/16-Bar format meaning 8 bar hook 16 bar chorus and I track it out so that the amount of total bars is as close to the tempo as posible... that makes all my tracks hover around 4 min. That way, if and when an MC gets on it, I can mold it very easily to fit his words. As far as creating a track, I either create or find a good main line, and then run with it. I can't explain it very well, cuz it just flows outta me. What you want to do is find out what inspires you most... is it melody? is it bass? maybe its the drums. That's what you start making first then elaborate on that. Build it like a house. Your strongest point (drums or bass or what ever) is the foundation. Next you move to putting up the frame... Build the rest of your elements one at a time. put it into a structured form (the 8-Bar/16-Bar is a nice structure to fool with...) now you have a solid frame to build your track on. Throw the roof on (that's a nice ending...) and then up a good entrance on it. Now it's time to decorate. Put in your drops, FX, rework your drums a little to better suit your near finished track, and lastly level it all off run EQ and compression... maybe a little limiting. that's how I do! Melody is my starting point. Then drums, bass and accent or harmonic melody for either the verse or hook... usually the hook so it's greatly distinguished from the verse.

Be good... or just good at it
You keep it pimp... I'm a keep it gangsta!

Good question Wolf. For what its worth, i usually compose one of two ways: firstly just on a piano keyboard with establishing chords and a melody (usually the chords first, and that usually establishes the mood), then the melody to go with the chords - then just translate that across to Reason and assign instruments. Or the otherway I might just be exploring synth sounds, or drum kits, and latch onto something (a good beat, or bassline, or arpeg etc), and build it up that way. My biggest issue is finding the time!

Love, Ingrid

the slicer and granulizer in fl studio are very good and simple to use
