Contempory adult music

Hi
Are there any musicians in mt other than rap, hiphop, hophip etc that can get together and regularly liase on their songs and productions within the genre of adult contempory ..otherwise known as easy listening/electro rock/classical nuances/instrumental/
If so, lets get an appreciation comparison self review thing together.
Soft rock on..

I am an old rocker from the 60's, have moved to Costa Rica, semi retired and after 25 years of not playing guitar I started again and am building my home recording set up, and having a blast doing it although it is pretty technical for me. I don't want to use anymore time on the computer than neccessary so I bought Riff Works to start with and have Line 6 KB37 interface and just starting to learn.

I am definitely blues and rock oriented and love latin and many world types of music and am basically open minded. Excuse me to all the hip hop lovers out there but I have to say it is one form of music that I simply do not like, so call me an old fart I guess. Any threads, websites, or forums relating to alternate types of music is welcome.

Anyway I just found this group and need all the help I can get to move along with recording, so will keep in touch with the forum.

Here is my website for anybody interested in the inspirational views, bird songs and monkeys for neighbors that I am fortunate to have.

Ok `almighty pattern' & `costaricabritt, (expat I presume), hi there. No, I decided in my maturing musical years not to be say, misunderstanding of other genre`s, but I know what I prefer. The 60`s & 70`rock era will never be repeated, but is it a trend that younger generations are showing more than a passing interest in it. Personally I enjoy jazz, blues, rock, prog rock, + some classical and electronic compositions. Thus my music tries to encompass the whole lot!!. However it is instrumental, and it is definately not like the music that dominates internet music hosts.
So thats how we arrive here, a get-together for the minority music. Post your music links in your next post, and maybe others that you have found on the net that has grabbed your attention.
Thanks for replying chaps.
Regards.

Hi LPD, I'm a new user to this site and think it is wonderful. But I quickly came to realize that there are such vast differences in musical taste and production techniques in the material found here that it makes it difficult for me to find like-minded users.

Personally, I love to hear rhythmic variation and syncopation, harmonic density, and melody, songs or "tunes" which can cross genres.

Please people correct me if you believe I'm wrong, but IMHO there seems to be two basic approaches at work here. One is a computer-based music production camp (sampling, re-mix etc) primarily concentrating on the craft of electronic music (techno-dance, trance, rap, hiphop, experimental...). Another camp whose primary mode is recording outside analog sources (electric/acoustic instruments and vocals) with a concentration on songs or tunes(rock, pop, folk, jazz, blues...). This group appears to be a minority.

One tends to start from personal musical expression that is enhanced through recording and production technique, and the other starts from material already sonically sculpted for the most part (inherently higher production values) crafting it into a personal musical expression.

I know this is a b&w view and that there is alot of overlap here with people combining parts of both processes, but in the end I think it rings true.

I would like to see is either:

  • A group dedicated to songs/tunes (across all musical genres). Maybe Contemporary Adult Music is the place. LPD?
  • Or the ability for users to filter the music posts by genre
  • The second item would really require that users be able to select the musical genre (from a pre-defined list including "Other") that best represents what they upload, and that the home page have a multiple select drop down list for users to filter what will be included in the recent post.

Looking for feedback here. Let me have it.

    Thanks,
    Dani
Out of love, not for money...good thing too!

I hear you on the genre filter. I myself an one of the hip-hop heads, but I am a HUGE fan of 60's and 70's rock, especially 70's prog rock. ELP (Keith Emerson more specifically) has to be one of my most major influences. And your right, I would love to here some great retro rock (I can't bring myself to classify 60's and 70's style rock as Adult Contemporary... I think of Ad Comp as Bryan Adams and Michael Bolton and the likes... not to say that they make bad music, just not to my cup of tea) There are some people here on MT that do create music without the aid of programs such as Reason and FL Studio... using traditional recording methods, but as Dani said they are the minority. I myself, would love to get into a real session room and rock out. With such and appreciation for and understanding of the classic and retro rock, and my skills in producing hip-hop (and some more experimental and electronic stuff), IMO, would make an interesting combination in a traditional recording setting. Unfortuante for me, my budget doesn't encompass such things. (Sigh) Ideas for another day and another time... but I'm with ya'll on this thing... the more expansive of a collection of artists, across all genres, could be a great benefit to this site and its users.

It'll do what it do till it done
You keep it pimp... I'm a keep it gangata!

hi - musicians of the general minority, thanks for the input. Firstly (again) the principle is not to stamp on other genre`s, but to open leads for the rest of us.
From what I understand there is a big thumbs up for the classic era, so right, there is no chance of such intense inspiration over such a short era happening again. But hey, its inspired waves of musicians since then and will continue to do so. Well Dani I have just got together with a realy old rock/folk style accoustic guitarist who neatly fits into your classification camp of recording outside of the electronic mode. Now to get that guit onto my PC multitrack!!
If we could organise (on Maketunes) for a genre filtered (re Dani) sections into which we could upload our material, we would then have say, in the adult contemp profile a selection of music from all who aspire to this format.
Alternativly, i could open a new band account in Soundclick (unlimited songs) and filter the material and place it in there, the only problem being that as far as I know only one email can access a band site.
Obviously the idea is to get all our material in one place and not scattered all over the web, I guess that I am some sort of organisational type.
    Any thoughts.
    Regards.

    Hi rockers
Dani, I am referring to this paragraph of yours, (I have pasted all material from this forum onto my Maketunes word doc, some sort of compulsive trait I think),
--One tends to start from personal musical expression that is enhanced through recording and production technique, and the other starts from material already sonically sculpted for the most part (inherently higher production values) crafting it into a personal musical expression.--
Quite right, I understand where you are at now. There is the quick fix method of `electronically’ adding bits of music to a multitrack without actually having to play a note of music. The other much longer more difficult method involves creating a piece of music to a pre conceived idea using your skills on instruments. This only a small percentage of todays musicians can do, using the correct blend of instruments for creating a particular musical scene. I actually do a bit of the first option using e jay loops etc. I do this because it is part of learning to record your own music, and ultimately I have crossed the two methods together with satisfactory results.
However I spend 95% of my time putting together instrumental tracks that hopefully compliment each other to compile a CD. Before I upload them they are carefully balanced out (EQ`d in other words) and mastered as best as possible. Before I put forward a Cd for distribution the songs have to be perfect, which is why the first CD that I intend to distribute has taken a year on just polishing and mastering, and I am still not completely happy. However a point must arrive when I say enough and leave it at that. This is another basic essential of making music. What is the point of quickly scratching together a collection of sounds, uploading it and telling everyone that it is not finished?! The concept of a piece of music is not a shopping trip where you forget to buy items, or get sidetracked.
However here is a lead to three pieces that I uploaded to Soundload, they are all available as full length plays. Time to tell is on my first made to release CD `Islands in a forgotten sea’. I have trimmed three minutes off the end of Soul Traveler, I am only going to release it on my second CD, `Soul traveling’ , probably mid next year, so the world must wait. OK back to reality, hope that you enjoy, look forward to hearing from you. http://www.soundstation.com/lastperfectday.aspx
