Drummers Competition

DJ Caesar's Drummers Competition

Drums are an essential part of every song, and we're here to find out who is maketunes' best drummer!
You have total freedom to create a drum only track, that means: no lead melody. Here's an example of what we're looking for: Loose by DJ Caesar

I am supplying a basic set of drum samples to help you kickstart your songs.

You can manipulate these samples in any way you want, but try to keep them in the percussive range.

Rules:

Create a drum only track: that means that absolutely any melody will make the track ineligible. You can only use a sub bassline to fill the lowest frequencies.
You must use 5 of the provided samples.
You can use any other samples or VSTs you want.
The track MUST NOT contain anything that can be considered as a lead melody, and that includes pads, high pitch basslines etc.
You can only submit three songs in this competition.
You can record yourselves drumming live, and so, don't have to use the given samples.
You CANNOT use ready and packed drum loops. This is a drumming competition and we want the best drum loop creator not the guy with loads of cash buying all he wants.
All submitted tracks must be downloadable.

After carefully listening to each submission, and after narrowing down the choices to 5 songs based on clarity and "grooviness" among other criteria, I set up the following Top 5 placed in random order:

After narrowing the contestants to the Top 5, it was hard for me to choose the actual winner of the contest as the songs were are all special and great, each in its own way. So I had to narrow the list down to a randomly placed Top 3:

All of these three songs deserve recognition, but unfortunately our contest crowns only one Drummer. Here are the winners placed in order:

I wish!!!! I'm only good on ethnic percussion (bongos, congas, etc...), and I don't have my bongos anymore... sold 'em a looooooong time ago. No, I just fixed my PSP and I'm gonna use that. I have a program called PSP rhythm, works like an old old copy of FL.

Forgot to mention that I am assuming for this competition that the feature of the song is drums and drum-work with no melody, so I went "over the top" a bit in comparison to a normal song in that there is not much room for any instruments. If the idea is to find a good drum track to add instruments and vocals etc I would have to free up some room and delete maybe some instruments in the mix. Love, Ingrid

there's a bassline in it, but it's not a bass, it's the "tom2" sample
I dont know if I have to consider it hi-pitched... it depends on the point of view
so dj caesar, tell me what you think, if there are problems, I'm cutting it
the beat doesnt need it, I just wanted to try something new and to experiment with the sounds (and I must say I've learned a lot of useful things!)

Guys, the Drummers' competition is new to the site, I know. You're all used to either Hip Hop or electronic comps.
I, unfortunately, have noticed that some entries do not meet the "percussion only" criteria, which happens to be the criteria. The comp is about percussion, drumming, hitting on things (bongos, conga, empty track bins, whatever!) not complex basslines. Check Loose and Obnoxious Drums to get an idea.
When I talked about bassline in the intro, I was referring to a low sub bassline that wouldn't stand out in the song but rather help fill all the ranges of sound. The last two entries have melodic basslines.
I am going to modify the forum and clarify things. I have to consider Funkbase's and Denis MT's entries ineligible until the tracks are rectified.

Melodic percussion is cool right? Like Djembes, toms, taiko drums, log drums, me banging on various drinking glasses filled with various levels of water using pens and pencils, chimes, etc... My track is taking a loooooong time. I have only one mic, and people have been getting annoyed at "all that banging and clanging!" And I have to do this in an empty house, or at Rell's. Like I said b4.... think RHCP's "Breaking The Girl" I hope this thing comes out nice.... its only sitting at :50 seconds right now. (sigh)

Thought the same thing... All the hats and one of the kicks are good for hip-hop. But that only gives me 4 out of five, which is why I decided to "bang on shit" myself, so I didn't have to use the samples. You got a mic P!t? Do what I'm doing and do a "Breaking The Girl" style drum track with a hip-hop backbeat. I'm recording myself banging on buckets, pots, pans, glasses, tables, etc... I'm even using odd items as percussion, like flipping the pages in a book. I just have to wait for the house to clear out, or else I get yelled at for "making all that fucking noise!" Thankfully I have untill the 15th of July!

The drums. Changing the pitch over time. Like how you sometimes hear those long 808 kicks making a melody. Or like a 70's psyche-rock drum solo.

It would be better if there was no melody, transposed or not...
You'll be using the kicks or whatever to create a melody and the point it the melody, the point is the beating drumming. So in essence you'll have to create lively drum loops, interesting shifts and turns without using a melody. Any submitted track should not need a melody, as its own drumming should be powerful enough to keep the listener entertained without having to use a melody. And by powerful I mean interesting and uplifting, not plain loud.

(sigh) I can't mic drums for SHIT! my track sounds like it was recorded in Joe's garage in 1984 on my Mom's Sony tape recorder. My dynamic sounded muffled, and Rell's condenser sounded distorted. I'm working on something else. Lucky for me I have a back-up track in the works already! lol! I'm still working on the Kitchen hip-hop track, cuz the rhythm is slick wit it, but the quality is horrible. Its a learning process... Should have mine up soon.

I'll start with an introduction of myself. I go by "Le Chevalier". It translates into "The Knight" I've been making tribal and minimal dark trance since the late 90's, but I have been away from the music scene for over 5 years now. A lot has changed in the way of software since then. So its been a slow process getting myself acquainted with this great software. I had stopped creating tracks about 2003, when I lost my almost all of my data in a hard drive failure. It was a disaster of Katrina proportions! I didn't have the resources to snap back for almost six years... (And... The worst part... I have none of my old tracks... I was a moron and didn't back up my shit!) But I'm back now, and when looking for an outlet for my tracks, I stumbled upon this site. I've been browsing the site, listening to all your tunes, reading the forums... just observing before I became a contributing member. I can honestly say, this is quite a place! Oh, and don't mind my crappy French. I'm kinda learning it for no reason other than I'm a sucker for that minimal French sound, so I've donned this French persona.

I've already gotten in touch with some of you for info on what new VST and other software are out there that would fit into my style. Thanks for the quick response and help people! I haven't gotten my Live setup quite yet, so I'm just using Reason for now. I haven't touched Reason since 2.0.... 4 is a beast!! Man I'm out of the loop on software! Perhaps I should have been keeping tabs on this stuff... Oh well... I'm a quick learner!

I figured for my first track back, I'd try my hand at this contest. Tribal mostly consists of drums anyway, so this was right up my alley. I need to get my filtering and sound design work back up to par, but this track came along quite nicely and quickly. If I had my skills fully brushed up, I might have taken a little more time on it, and it might have turned out a little better.

Sonic Reality World Percussion, and Sonic Reality Vintage Drums. Refills for Reason. They are all combinators, additionally run thru arpeggiators, filters, EQ, compression. I then automated the arpeggiators all the way down to the resolution going between 1/16 and 1/32 to get those little glitchy rushes. Its crazy how you get creative when you are put to the task to create a full song using only what is usually just one element of a song, and make it flow and evolve. Its like a sensory deprivation chamber. If you shut out all other input, the mind can't handle the lack of stimulus, so it creates its own. Except in this case it was a creativity deprivation chamber and my musical mind went into overdrive! lol!!

OOps. I made top 5. Cool bro. Docta!!! I knew it the moment i heard that track. I imagine you would have had two of ur entries if the kitchen percussion idea was completed.
