I think I know what you mean. The hard hitting bass sound comes with lots of trial and error... I'm not sure if you're asking about a bass drum or a bassline but, either way I'd suggest experimenting with a combination of EQ and compression. Go easy on that EQ, try to take away what you don't like out of the sound instead of pumping up the low end real high to make it bassy... Since you're taking away instead of adding, you'll probably need to take the overall volume up on that track, bringing out the frequencies you wanted from it.
Compression gets much more complicated and could be used several different ways for different bass sounds and all methods could be right... It all depends on the specific song you're working on, the signal strength, the dynamic range of the bass track... Try a few settings out and see if you can find something that works.
