How do I get Cubase and midi keyboard working

Hi All

I am having no end of trouble getting my keystation49e to talk to vst in Cubase SX3. I am completely new to this style of music making having previously worked in studios with real touchy feely desks and tape machines etc.

If I press a key on the keystation I can see it is received in Cubase. If I trigger a vst from the onscreen kbd, I can see the audio on the output, I just can't get the two to be friends. I have read manual, watched tutorials but have still not got to grips with this. I have obviously got something screwed up somewhere and am hoping somebody far more knowledgeable can help. I have place a screen dump showing what I mean at http://www.maketunes.com/images/screenpix.

I would really appreciate any help.
Strangely everything works as it should in Ableton Live6 which came with the kbd.

Regards

Its been quite a while since I saw Cubase, but I'm pretty sure that you don't need to touch the mixer in relation to setting up the midi keyboard.

I would start fresh, and just go to the Cubase MIDI preferences page, and ensure that it looks in order there. I don't think I had to setup much at all to get the midi keyboard working with Cubase. I simply plugged it in via the midi cable, started cubase up, ensured the "Delta 1010LT MIDI" was available as a midi input, and could immediately see the midi light flash as I pressed the keys.

Then I loaded a VST instrument, and initially couldn't hear it when playing the keys... so then I looked more closely at the dropdown boxes on the left hand side of cubase.

This is what worked for me... (from memory!)....

I created a new midi track. Then I selected the dropdown box to the left hand side of this new midi track, and selected "DELTA 1010LT" as the midi input for that track. (Thats the name of my audio/midi interface, so yours may be an equivilent, or "USB DEVICE" if you are plugging in your keyboard using USB cable instead of midi cable).

Then I selected the midi output dropdown box which was also to the left hand side of the new midi track, and selected my chosen VST instrument synth.

That worked for me. Hope it helps!

tks for the reply, unfortunately didn't help. The kbd didn't connect. In the inspector for the midi channel the input is set to keystation49e and the output set to monologue. In the setup midi in is set to keystation49e and midi out is not connected as I have no hardware synths. This as far as I understand the manual, is how it is supposed to be.

Dam that sounds pretty spot on to me. Perhaps you could try sending it to a different 3rd party vst, to see if theres something there causing the issue?

Tks for the advice but didn't work same story, but I have fixed/unfixed the problem. I unistalled Cubase and reinstalled and guess what, it was exactly the same, no connectivity between kby and vsts. I then installed it on a different drive and lo and behold it worked. So I'm guessing there is something it is clashing with, maybe Ableton, whatever it now seems to be doing what it should.
