Looking for a better place to post this...*g*
Have you made any experience with media or other services to promote your songs?
For example:
I´ve subscribed to "Songs Wanted" where producers, publishers and labels post their song requests.
It´s quite expensive (I think so) and there are lots of no-names looking for material.
Further I receive the Songwriter eMail newsletter with a few classifieds from people looking for songs (some are interesting, but there are also school bands advertising...).
I´ve recently opened a profile at music2deal.com where producers and labels enter certain criteria and are shown all the songs that match their search. There are about 1000 industry users (even a lot of bigwigs) registered, but I think they hardly use that source. I´ve posted my songs on their frontpage and my stats always say "you had no visitors yet".
Has anyone of you guys made similar experience - or better? Has anyone subscribed to Songlink?
Or do you know of better ways?
Let us know.....*g*

Hmmm perhaps there also needs to be a musician Promotion forum, for discussing promotion methods and attempts?
--edit--
I've setup a Promotion Methods forum, and moved this thread there...
Any way, back on topic - anyone got promotion experiences to share?
Such a good idea you´ve set up this forum, Matt.
As far as music2deal.com is concerned I´ve just talked to a rock music producer and he said he kindly appreciates that idea and the effort that comes with it, but he doesn´t think any label, publisher or producer would search these pages for new songs. He had subscribed as a user (for free; one who´s looking for songs) but had himself removed quickly again.
So spill your ideas, people - what do you do to get your music signed?
Have a great day
Julian

What I try to do to Promote my Musik, is to
get on every Website imaginable and leave something
on each one as a reminder that I am out there, and
my Soul intention is to make Musik. Advertising Upcoming Events and New Material has Proved to bring more People to the Live Shows, and Live Shows is the next best way to get yourself heard...so I have been told. IF...you wanna be signed you should put together a nice Packet or Music Profile before approaching anyone in the Music Industry...because they are looking for Talents who are Worth spending thier Money on. It doesn't always work when you wait for them to approach you...It's best that you Contact them first...and see things in a Professional Manner the way most Labels do...to most...it's all about the Money$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$
I pretty much promote my music the same ways you guys are talking about but I think 2 good sites and 1 of them everybody knows myspace.com alote of promoters and people to hear your music, but there is one more that I found I like better than myspace.Myspace is to mainly make friend but this site is to make friends but mostly for musicians here is the link you might have to copy and paste http://tagworld.com/-/ClickTracking.ashx?url=http://tagworld.com/-/world... They are both free,DJBIZZERK
I´ve uploaded two songs now (for the very first time here), to promote this to you guys, hoping you´ll give me some feedback. Just click on my profile to "see" them.
Thanks for the link, DJBIZZERK, I think I´ll sign up there.
I´m also on myspace now, curious about what´s gonna happen there *g*. It´s www.myspace.com/julianangelroxx
Okay, send your thoughts. Thank you...

...just made some good stuff with REASON 3 and i'd like to promote it,but i dont know how it actually works with copyrights etc. What is the first step i need to take....THANXaLOT&GREETZ....PEAT
You can get a mp3 tagger man.Look for a free one online and then you can tag the mp3 with your name and your copyright. If you don't have a copyright you can still tag the mp3 and put a comment in the mp3 that nobody can use the song unless they have a written agreement from the original artist. That is pretty much just as good as a copyright.Look on line for mp3 tagger.
ThanXXX 4 that man,i'll do it...by the way and what if i want to get copyrights..what i need 2 do?? Is it long process??
You can look up copyright my music in google and find what you are looking for.I does take time and money.I believe you have to pay for every track you get a copyright for.It was a while ago when I looked that up so I could not be right about that.Just look it up on google and you will find something to give you info about it.
*Firstly, I'm not a lawyer!*
I've read that one thing people sometimes do, as a form of copyright (or proof of original creation date), is to place a recording, or written material, whatever, into an envelope, and mail it to yourself.
It goes through the mail system, sealed, and date stamped by the official mail service, and then arrives back at your home.
You don't open it, just store it away. So now you have a sealed date stamped proof of your creation date on file.
If a year later someone puts out a copied version of your song, you can provide this as proof that you created it originally, if you're taking them to court over it etc.
Remember I'm no lawyer - this is just a technique I've heard of.
u r right matt. what u r referring to is a "poor man's" copyright. the best way to do it is send it to yourself via certified mail. i've done it a few times with my art and characters.
here's the download link to a pretty good free mp3 tag editor Mp3 Tag Tools

Cool spankD.I was looking for the site where I got mine, but I couldn't find it.The mp3 tagger helps out alot on the copyright thing as well. You do that and the mail thing and I think it would be hard for some one to steal your music.
HI Guys
heres a new thread
Is anyone else having the " All i want to do is play covers syndrome" from band members or is it just me..
I,ve been trying to get a band to go out and play original material for 5 years
but all they seem to want to do is play Crappy Eric Clapton covers and gimmie three stepsbecause its what the public wants....
is it just here in the USA or does it happen elesewere? I never experianced this in England (I lived there from age 0 to age 38 and gigged extensivly.
In Topeka KS They all seem to have this opinion that No,one wants to listen to original work..and even if they do its just other songwriters.do you think this is true ?
I write songs because i have this need to do so
for me its part of who i am .. and to stop doing so would be unthinkable...
my current band was telling me that all they realy want is to make the people dance by playing crappy cover tunes that have been done to death already for years..
Tell me am i a Nut case to still want the elusive sonwriters recognition..and play in a band that does ALL its own material. I personly would rather do 1 good gig a month than do 5 cover gigs its not about the cash.....
i,m going out live with my original set next month ALL ALONE...again
what do you think?
thanks for the rant
Dean
I would have to say Dean I am with you man.Why play the same crappy songs that the people supposedly want? What if you and the band play original work from you guys and they like and want that? I would go with my heart man and do what is best it is not about the money your right man.I hope you do well man.
Thanks DJ
at least somone has the creative genes
Dean
i agree with bizz on this 1. u have to go with your gut. in any case whether it's new music or old stuff some1 is bound not to like it. just give the middle finger salute and do your thing.
and as an aside, there is nothing new under the sun. "new" or old, it's all been done in some shape form or fashion before. take a page from digital underground and "do what u like"

Yep that is the way I like to look at it man.If they want the old stuff, but you want to present your work.Mix it up a little Dean do some old stuff with your art mixed. Then it will be old with your new stuff in it.You never know man everybody could like it.
By default everything you make is copyrighted as soon as you make it.

Illusive is correct -
More information about copywriting is here:
http://www.copyright.gov/
It costs $45, takes around 3-6 months to get your papers back from the time you mail it (in my experience), and you can do an entire album's worth of music at once. The copyright is valid from the postmarked date/date of receipt by the copyright office, though, even though it takes so long for you to get your official papers.
You just fill out the .pdf form from that website, print it out, sign it, and submit your original material (usually 2 discs and all relevant artwork). Fairly easy to do, if you're interested.
Creative commons licenses are also really coming up, so I'd check that as well.
We are islands.
