I haven't (before now) found a site quite like this. This is perfect for me, I think. Unless I am in the wrong place. In which case, excuse me. I think I am in the right place. Anyway...
I enjoy many styles and sounds, and I don't enjoy some. My interests range from acoustic folk (old suzanne vega, Sheryl Crowe, Gillian Welch and David Rawlings, Bob Dylan, CSN, etc), prog rock (red rider, pink floyd, rush), show tunes (Grease, Jesus Christ Superstar, Phantom, Rent), vocal jazz (Ella Fitzgerald, Bobby McFerrin), metal (Danzig, Tool), rap (Ice-Cube, Paris, E-40), country, funk-metal, and on and on...
I don't like Wagner, King Crimson - I can barely stand, and a good handful of, what I deem as pretentious jazz, because I don't get it, or because there is no it (nothing there), or its experimental disonnance without resolution. So be it. Everyone has a place.
I record with a very minimal setup, and mostly on my Yamaha acoustic/electric six string guitar.
Two reasons:
1) The engineering for set up and take down really ruined my mood for the actual playing of the music. By the time everything was just so, I didn't feel like playing anymore. With a minimal setup, I can be up and running in just a minute or two.
2) Money - Don't have a spare room to devote to music anymore, so I have to "make do" with what I have.
I use the Boss BR-600 digital recorder. It's a Roland product, 8 track digital, with faders and all, two simultaneous inputs (maybe more, I haven't needed to try), I can output to my amp, or to headphones for monitoring. It records on Compact Flash (1 Gig Max, won't work with more), so I can swap cards between my computer and the records.
The recording format is proprietary, but roland has a utility that you can download from their site, which provides imports and exports to that format and on the card, so I don't have to mess with a USB connection between the recorder and the PC. That worked, but it was a bit of a hassle. swapping the CF card is quicker and easier.
Software - Audacity, open source wav editor, multi track, works pretty well.
Also, have Fruity Loops and Sony Acid Studio. For what I do, Cubase was really overkill, so I stopped using it a few years back. It's great for some things, but also had it's startup quirks.
If the opportunity presents itself, it would be fun to collaborate with someone on a project. I like to try to take different perspectives musically. In the past, I did a lot of original songs; now I like to do covers... but mix it up, take it out of context, or otherwise explore it, musically and lyrically.
I see a lot of hip-hop type artists here, and that's great. I have only had time to listen to a few songs, all very slick so far. I hope my contributions can meet the level of skill/presentation that the artists have shown so far, or at least not distract from the real talented musicians on the board.
If so, Groovy! Peace.

Wow what an epic introduction! Welcome to maketunes Howard, you're in the right place! Sounds like you'll be right at home. It's true that there are many people here into hiphop and other forms of electronic music, but everyone is more than welcome to get involved, as plenty of musical variety keeps the ideas flowing, as well as making for an interesting range of listening..
