Hey CowbellMerchant, you're certainly not too old to start out hehe.

The options you have open to you for making hiphop beats are endless, and you may wish to try some of the suggested software/hardware for yourself to see what "feels" right for you to use. The most vital thing is feeling comfortable with your home studio, so that your creativity can flow...

The hiphop guys here can no doubt suggest some great software/hardware you might like to start with.

Here are some demos you might like to try out, to see if you prefer one over another... a lot of people get into hiphop production using Reason or FLstudio for example...

16 too old? You make me feel old! There's no age on hip-hop! Most of the greats didn't make it until they were well into there 20's heading on to their 30's. You need to find which program you feel most comfortable. I find reason to be easiest for me, but that doesn't necessarily mean that it'll be good for you. A lot of people start on FL (Fruity Loops Studio), I find that it throws so much at you, there's no way to not get a result, but its hard to master. I started on software that doesn't exist anymore. (Remember, I'm old... not really, but I sure feel like it at 27!) If you decide to go with Reason, I'm your guy for help, along with Teddy Brazello, and many many others! If choose to use FL, than The Sole, among others, would be your guy to talked to. The other major choice would Ableton Live, but I find that its really better for performing rather than composing. I use it to master my beats I make in Reason, using Rewire. Rewire is a protocol that allows you to litterally wire Reason into another program, so you can use its features along with Reason.

Reason uses its own instruments and sounds, and you can add sounds and loops with things called Refills.
FL and Live use VST or Virtual Studio Technology plug-ins along with there own sounds.
All three can use Sound Fonts or SF2 files.

That's the basics. Until I know more about the style you are trying to achieve and a little background on yourself, that's about all the info I can spew out right now. All I can say is you're on the right course if you have a Wu symbol as your pic! I'm throwin up my Double U's right now! I was front and center at Lalapalooza when I was your age watching the Wu in there prime!

Take two of these beats, and call me in the morning. Doctor's orders!

I'm no producer but I can provide you some advice. But you know, Doc took all my advices :D Well, this is what I was gonna say (and this is what I think) :

To be come a producer or beat maker, you can either do two things, buy/download a software, or get a midi hardware device, like a piano with different instruments inside it.

If you don't want that, get a beat maker software. You can get demo's (of course!)... But you cannot safe for some reason. These are the software's I prefer:

*Fruity Loops Studio
*Reason
*Cakewalk

If you can't be bothered making your own 'drum loops'. Go to Make Tunes Sponsor! Prime Loops! They have great Loops, also, they can teach you how to make beats (in there tutorial videos) with the software's I've given you.

I hope this kind of information was useful to use. Thanks, and welcome to Make Tunes!

I started with a keyboard, the yamaha motif 6, but its probably best you start off with some software, like fl studio or reason. If you want to get a feel for some hardware you can go to a guitar center and play around on some stuff ( thats what i usually do before i make a purchase).

Ok, i know someone who has reason. Is reason able to be on two different computers?

ed's picture

legally no but im sure your pc wont mind

IngridTornado's picture

Yeah give Reason a go Cowbell, its pretty easy to build up beats. Plenny of youtube videos too to get you started and then ask us any specific questions. I like it is a good program imo. Love, Ingrid

CowbellMerchant's picture

OK, so i have had a few problems. My friend does not have reason anymore he gave reason 3 away. But he did give me fruityloops to use. But every person i talk to in real life and on forums say reason is better so...?

IngridTornado's picture

Doesn't matter - FL is ok to get started. True, in my opinion Reason is far superior in many ways, but FL is still ok. Its just a tool - your creativity is more valuable. There's plenny of good producers here that use it. You can always transfer your skills across to something else later. Love, Ingrid

ah ok. ill install fl now.

Good choice. I use FL. Plus the vsts and vstis will and can help in the creation of music and provide the tweaking power necessary.

I agree with what Doc Said! Now I feel Old Too,,,lol.
I would start with what you can afford and what your comfortable with! FL Studio is a great little program and there is a bunch of free vst instruments all over the net .
http://www.kvraudio.com/ has a bunch of effects and instruments

lol. Yeah you guys spoke for mr on th old thing. I didn't stat till I was 26 and I'm 29 now. Your lucky. When I was sixteen everything cost alot more and the qualitie was awful. Had I started any sooner than I had I would have ended up with hundreds and thousands of dollars worth of equipment that would be obsolite now. Take advantagee of sofware and pc power to mold your skills. Save your money and buy an mpc or somthing like that 2 years from now. You'll be more exprienced, the tech will be better cheaper and smaller and you'll have that ablity to get better use out of your hard ware before it turns into a caveman paperweight.
Thank you for your feedback.

Back in 1998, when I first started making tracks I used a yamaha PSR-540, which I'd still use today if I still had it... obsolete it is not! And I also used Reason's predecessor, Rebirth, which was just to 303 synths one for synth, one for bass, and two 808 drum machines, which you could load new sounds into by using mods, which were like baby refills. It had a distortion filter, a delay, and a PCF filter, which is like a pattern based ECF, with a frequency modulator. That's it. I still use Rebirth every blue moon when I want that old school 90's acid techno synth sound. I wish I still had my PSR-540... It was midi capable, programmable workstation, that had its own disk drive to sabe your files to .mid or yamaha's .sty style file, which when played back thru the keyboard could send it as midi data to say... FL or Reason. Oh it was a bad motha fucka! But... i had to pay probation one month, had no job, and figured my keyboard wasn't worth the jail time... I pawned it... never to get it back. I did however get way more than I thought I get for it! (Though I'd get like 150, got 320!! Originally the board cost 699, when the folks bought it for me in 1998, pawned it in 2005) I know how to work the pawn shop for every penny!

Take two of these beats, and call me in the morning. Doctor's orders!
