Hey everyone, well I've just added musical genres to the site, so you now are required to select the appropriate genre when you upload a new song (or in fact when you edit an existing song of yours and try and save it).
This will allow you to browse specific genres of music that you're interested in, once people have started categorising their tunes of course. There are almost 8000 songs which need to be categorised!
So far I've created the following categories:
Acoustic
Ambient
Chillout
Drum n Bass
Electronica
Experiment
Film Soundtrack
Hiphop
House
Metal
Pop
R'n'B
Reggae
Rock
Techno
Trance
Other Genre
The "Other Genre" category is for tracks which, well, don't fit the other genres - if I see certain styles building up in there, I'll need to look at adding that particular genre to the list...
I'm wanting to keep the number of categories to a minimum, but if you feel there should be another one, let me know below...
I'm thinking perhaps there should be more guitar/singer/songwriter genres for the non-electronic crowd, and possibly a couple more electronic - but as I mentioned, preferably don't want to have a huge genre list.
What we need once we've finalized the categories is for you all to go through your songs, edit each one, select its genre, and hit Submit to save it. This will mean your songs are now browseable in the MakeTunes Musical Genre section :)
If you want to check it out, you can browse the genres here. Notice on the left sidebar menu there is a list of all the categories to browse.
I'll be setting up a better system soon, with more obvious integration thoughout the site, but for now that should let you guys start categorising your tunes! If you each start picking the genres, we'll soon have a few thousand songs in there!
I need to know what you think about these genres!
Cheers,
Matt

very good matt! it's useful!
I agree with Light 3000, great idea Matt and very useful too! This way I can directly get to the music I like and know about and submit feedback...
One more question, where do we find these categories?

Good to hear guys, this has been on my to-do list for some time!
I haven't made the categories hugely obvious just yet, as I thought I'd wait to hear some feedback - but you can see a link on the left hand sidebar, currently titled "Musical Genre" (this may change yet).
So far only my tracks have been added, so everyone get your tracks sorted soon :)
Just to clarify again, you don't need to reupload or anything, just edit the page of the tune you want to select a genre for, and you'll see the dropdown box of choices....
Yeah, got it Matt, I've started categorizing my tracks, but I'll do it in doses coz there are tons of tracks...

Cool Matt, are you going to get rid of the other genre field where you just type the genre in yourself?
Mike S
Hey Mike - I was toying with that idea for a while, but in the end decided against it, opting instead to go for a smaller number of defined genres. I'd prefer to keep it manageable like that at this stage.
If there are genres that are missing and many people would like added, please feel free to make suggestions.
I'm a little undecided on some of them so far - such as the "Experiment" genre... that was essentially somewhere I thought the random bits and pieces of musical oddity could end up hehe.
cool idea although you'll need more categories to more specify the music like with some of mine it would fit in Ambient but I like to say Dark Ambient if that's ok with you?
I've already put two songs under 'Hiphop' :) Just to let you know ^.^

Happy to hear suggestions - though as I mentioned, I'm not wanting to get TOO specific.... otherwise every single genre would have 10s of sub genres.... and sub sub genres....
ok I see your point....
now for film soundtracks, do they have to be used in a film yet?
Hey matt, great idea, I will sometime sort out my songs into category's. Can I Suggest, you make a category called Judged? were people can upload there songs, and maybe you can get a panel of say 3 judges, and put them in a best of sort of thing? Maketunes best tune of the month? respect to everyone on here. Matt you have a great site. lets all show some respect and make this site a better, if not the best. DJ Synchro...........
Rev - I think the film soundtrack category can just be for tunes which people have created with that in mind... as I know some people here have done. Whether or not they've been featured in a film yet.
Synchro - that's kinda part of another feature I've got in mind, but it's not ready yet unfortunately. It's on my list :)
cool idea DJ Synchro but who will be the judges? they've got to like a variety of music and they've got to be kind in letting people down when thier songs arn't that good....lol....
Sweet ;)
cool matt some of my stuff would fit in that category but I've just put it under Ambient or Dark Ambient....the label I may be signed to will use my stuff for films too.....
Rev - yeah thats right, there will be some degree of crossover for some peoples music, so I guess it's up to the individual how they would most accurately categorize the track.
that sounds good to me.....
Great idea matt, very useful.
Nice Idea Matt. This will save time a lot.
But I'll like to know which of the genre's do you think these two tracks would fall into. All thanks to your samples from the last two electro contests, I was able to develop a new genre which I'm eager to promote gradually called "Jazzipoptrofunk" where I try to pick key elements and instruments from the different genres encompassing all the genres that make up Jazzipoptrofunk (Jazz, Hip Hop, Electro and Funk).
Probably will fit in the experimental Genre for now till the whole world gets to recognize. lol.

"FunkBase - Jack of all Trade,Master of Most"
Hey matt I just noticed- you should add RnB to the genres list.
Matt I also think these genres might need to be added too while still maintaining the list to a minimum: Gospel, Reggae, pop and possibly Jazz. Just a suggestion.
"FunkBase - Jack of all Trade,Master of Most"
Wicked, been waiting for this. Well done Matt. Now I can comment on tracks in a genre I'm familiar with.
________________
-just a thought-
Yup this is good feedback people. I'll take all this into consideration, and likely add several more genres.
In the meantime, don't feel you have to cram a track into an unsuitable genre, that would defeat the point. We'll get there :)
Funkbase - yes that's a tricky one, as many of us do like to create tunes which fuse all sorts of genres and styles together... not an easy one to figure out here.
Illusive - yup it's long overdue! I got sidetracked by grand schemes for maketunes upgrades - but in the end I think a few core crucial things like this are the best way forward at this stage.
Gospel... perhaps could be rephrased to include all religious-themed music? Any ideas? I'm sure there must be quite a few mainly Christian songs uploaded, so they could probably use their own genre.
RnB... should it have it's own genre, or be lumped in with hiphop?
Yep I think a religious genre would be fine.
I think RnB should have Its own genre- as far as I know quite a lot of RnB music is uploaded on to maketunes, so it wold make sense.
Would* lol sorry
so instead if sayin rap i should say hip hop genre???????
History In The Makeing
King Dattoli's MySpace
Yeah, Hip-Hop encompasses Rap, so its a more broad term, falling in line with Matt's idea of a minimal number of genres. Hip-Hop can be purely instrumental, or have lyrics. I listen to a lot of DJ work and instrumentalists such as RJD2, Nujabes, Krush, etc... Think about it... When you used to go to the record store, rap would be under hip-hop/rap/rnb, right? But.... RnB should not be lumped in with hip-hop on this site. I find that RnB may fall under the category of Hip-Hop sometimes, but its one of those genres that can border on Soul or Pop, so I believe it should have its own category.
Take two of these beats, and call me in the morning. Doctor's orders!
Matt: Great idea this way maketunes gets yet another function rendering it more simple to browse through genres one likes.
Datolli: If youre not posting an a capella you should...
one I think you should add is House
Yeah I agree. RnB should be on it's own.
"Funkbase - Jack of all Trade, Master of Most"
Soz Revjoe and Matt.. I understand what you mean by people will feel let down. But i meant in a sense of Maketunes best for a playlist of a maketunes radio? Sorry I do appologise for my lack of explanation. It would be good to have a a radio on here. and the judges can pick say 30 songs. to be played. and they can make a there judgement live on the radio. And the one they feel they like best. will get a good amount of points added to there score? Im sorry I didnt expalin myself proper earlier, I was in rush to get out. And how about hard house - hard Trance and nu metal for more genres?
and maybe on the radio idea, Maybe the radio dj can do a special live mix for other sites to listen to. it wil get your site more known around the world? Soz Just trying to think up sum ideas.
this is a awesome idea matt.. keeping it simple is the best way to go about i think.. Ill go back and recatogorize my tracks in a little while
Like the dark ambient RevJoe. That will suit one or two of mine. Was thinking of an "Experimental" category too Matt - some of my songs I am trying to write in order to be hard to pigeonhole (as opposed to being unfinished ideas or odds and sods)?? It's maybe too close to the Experiment genre you already have though. Wicked idea overall though!
Mike S
Ok, so I'm thinking I need to add:
- R'n'B
- Chillout
- House
- and possibly some more traditional musical genres, I know there are quite a few piano/classical type songs... Jazz was also mentioned...?
Thoughts?
Synchro - Yeah I think for the time being I'll keep the sub-genres together (eg trance, hard trance, psytrance etc all under "Trance").
Guitar players and bands etc? What sorts of genres do you need? I have Rock and Acoustic so far... pop I guess could cover some others. Any thoughts?
Mike_S - Oh yeah I think Experiment will do for all the little snippets / unusual experimental stuff...?
Experimentla and electronic Experimental would encompase all the different type songs. Also a mature section, perhaps. My BEST recommendation would be to have a VOCAL section. All vocalized songs go there. All genres. That would sort a shit load of music. The artist would describe the flow/singing etc. Just my two cents worth. Alot of Funkbase's music would be funk or hiphop. R&B would be hiphop too, unless a VOCAL song. The vocal tracks in the vocal categories can install the genre entitlment ...kinda like a subgenre explaining it is a vocal/rock.... or whatever. My thoughts
Interesting idea, but I think I'll stick with genres over and above whether or not they have vocals. To me that makes more sense in the longrun. Eg, a rock musician finds maketunes, will likely check out the rock category first. They would want to hear their rock songs with/without vocals, rather than only finding some instrumental rock songs, and then having to go to the vocals category, and sift through all the hiphop/pop/club/electronic songs with vocals to find the rockvocal songs.
The mature genre is another interesting idea... not sure well it would work though, for example, a lot of rap has a bunch of swearing in it hehe - but I doubt that people will want to put it in a separate category because of that. There have been a few "adult" themed songs of varying sorts uploaded over the years, so I suppose that's where they could be put perhaps... hmmm I'll think that one over.
Cool! The Chillout genre will do nicely for my "Concrete Dreams" track thanks Matt.
I think it's great that you added musical genres to the site, way to go Matt!!
Turk.
different species and different genres!!!tnx mat now we can see the other chemical bro
thers ;)
thanks matt for this set up it makes it soooo much easier to find music it's almost unbelievable......
of course some of my stuff doesn't quite fit in the box sort speak but I'm working with it...... I hope everyone else is having as much fun as I am going through my tunes.....
Cool, happy to see the categories starting to fill up now... couple hundred songs sorted so far, about 7000 to go :)
If you have any doubt as to the genre, just put it in OTHER GENRE, and we can take a look at what's needed.
I was thinking that there really should be a rap section like dattoli said.. just because hiphop and rap are considered two completely different things by alot of people. kinda like drum n bass and techno.
I dont consider what i make hiphop. just my thoughts
Ok, what are peoples thoughts on adding Rap as another Genre?
well there's 13 pages done...lol...
Hi everyone, Adam Purski here. Also use to be known as Element-A.
Rap and Hip-Hop are different, but just to let you know I do Rap and Hip-Hop at once. Now, what you should do Matt is that you can make TWO choosing colums. Do you know what I mean? Say like someone did R'n'B and Pop. They can basically put them two genres on the TWO colums you provided us with. Just giving you a little more support on what you can do with the 'genres'.
______
ADAM PURSKI
______
www.myspace.com/adampurski
ok two colums may be a bit much at this time but it don't sound like a bad idea....what do you think matt?
"Another Genre" most places you go to when it says something like that they want you to still choose something, but that's cool it's an actual genre here at maketunes.com.....
Naw I dont think rap should be on its own.
Hmmm 2 category selection huh.... what are other peoples thoughts on that? I'll have to see if it's doable too of course, but might as well hear what people think about it.
I would add metal to rock, in the same category, like rock/metal
it dont really matter if you add a rap catogory or not.. more our less what i was thinking.. i can still put rap in the audio info.. and keeping all the rap tracks all in the hiphop catagory would be more organized..
that idea purski had is pretty cool.. if we get a choice between two genres instead of one.. then I think the rap genre being added would matter a little more. but still aint important
Definitely add polka though.....lol
Where does breakbeat go? House? Dnb? Electronica? Or Techno?

Hey Matt, I was browsing through the genres and I noticed that there were absolutely no posts in the Ethnic category. In my opinion, the Ethnic genre should be excluded; it is an important genre indeed but I don't see anybody producing Ethnic tracks today... Is there and ethnic producers here?
_________________
www.DJCaesar.Tk
Yeah I think you might be right DJ C - there have been quite a few over the years, but not many these days.
in the last period (especially for the guitar contest) some users uploaded metal or metal-oriented songs.
I think it's time to add this category!
I like all kinds of music, but when I discovered maketunes I didnt know if to register or not because I thought it was a site for hiphop or electronic music producers, and this is not true!
there are al lot of metal home producers out there, it's time to do something to motivate them to register, if you want this community to grow and to attract passionate people!
the guitar comp has been a great idea, now it's time to add metal to the list of the music genres!
keeping the number of categories to a minimum is important and I totally agree with you, but I must say that most musicans or producers I know started from or play metal! we're talking about one of the most popular genres in the web, the only one that has around one hundred subgeneres!
and, still talking about the list of categories, in my (humble) opinion you shouldn't think about the present (how many hip hop or ethnic or metal producers are here now) but of the future, because I see it this way:
example1:
I'm a Reggae home producer; I surf the web; I find maketunes; I see it's interesting and there's my category in the list; I register and become a member
example2:
I'm a metal producer; I surf the web; probably I will never find maketunes because there's no reference to this genre in it; and if I find it, my category isn't even in the list; I go away
and believe me, for one reggae producer there are at least 100 metal ones, that could bring some fresh air and new sounds and ideas to this site!
I agree with Denis, I think Metal would be a good genre to add to the list. I also think Jazz and Orchestral/Classical would be great choices. Progressive is a genre I would like to see on here, but I am not sure how popular that would be.
I think the idea of being able to put a song under more then one genre is a really good as well!
What Denis said!!. :)
haha yea there has been many cases where i've uploaded a song and put it in the Rock genre coz it's the closest thing to metal...
Ok guys, thats a fair feedback. I'll add the Metal genre for you now :)
There is now a Metal genre!
YAY! Good on ya matt :)
How about Dubstep??
Check out my new track!!http://www.maketunes.com/audio/screaming-zombie-vibdubstep
yeah thanx a lot matt!
lol wtf is dubstep!?
THIS IS dubstep!!
http://www.maketunes.com/audio/screaming-zombie-vibdubstep
lol sorry still not gettin ya...
To explain, Dubstep is an off shoot of DnB. Its uses that same style bass, but has a more reggae styled drum beat. Its also a considerable amount slower than DnB. Sometimes confused with 2 step. 2 Step is more like So Solid Crew, like this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TRCBy8hrOIM Dubstep is like this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=juoRdXKO2go
Take two of these beats, and call me in the morning. Doctor's orders!
dubstep is bascially dnb slowed down..simplez =]
genre catagories is a very good idea BUT PLEASE KEEP IT TO THE ONES EVERYONE KNOWS, and not sub genres and genres people randomly make up =]
thanks

Sup peeps, Yo matt i like the way we can select the genres to listen to every tune in that genre made by all these excellent maketunes producers and artists, i do think you should add:
FUNK
BLUES
JAZZ
DUBSTEP (rare genre not many people are familiar with) i suppose it could be classed under D n B but when you listen DUBSTEP and D n B you can notice that they arent really that much the same.
also another genre came to mind TRIP-HOP (cypress hill for an example)

cypress hill trip hop????????????
trip hop is Massive Attack, Portishead, Tricky, Thievery Corporation...

it has nothing to do with their style, it's a remix album, it's not part of their "tudio albums" discography.
if you take a couple of songs by U2 and make a drum n bass remix album out of them, you're not turning bono & co. into a drum n bass band.
DJ Muggs made a trip hop album, but as a solo project
by the way crazy ace! nothing personal, I'm just expressing my opinion, I dont want to offend anybody!
respect
no offence taken dude dont worry bout it. but i'm just gonna point out one last thing i wouldn't of said trip-hop if i didn't know what i read but i read it somewhere under cypress hill history not off wikipedia, i wouldn't go sayin stuff that i didnt find out somewhere else...obviously i read it and remembered i read it and posted it but then again this dispute is pretty pointless lol...peace

What about a link in the Blue Bar at the top of the page for Musical Genres? I know there is a link in the notice board bit but I think it would be noticed more at the very top in that bold font with the wee triangle. It's a cool feature and one I think people just browsing the site for the first time might be interested in - it might make them hang around for a while.
Mike S
AYE BRO,WATS GOOD ON THE GOSPEL GENRE???
S.A.I.N.T.
still needs more genres. ALOT more.
