Musical Genre vs Instruments to use

Hello!!I'm new in the forum..;)
Well, I'm creating this thread because I'm a beginner in making music and I have lots of problems when it's about choosing the instruments for a project...I know there isn't a recipe for this so I know it's kinda hard to answer but may be you can guide me or tell me what kind of things I should use...
The genres I like the most are Pop, Pop/Rock and R&B, but everything I create sounds like Dance/Techno or some like that..I use Fruity Loops and its instruments are not that Pop if you know what I mean..Perhaps, I'm not choosing right..you tell me..

I hope not to bother you, thanks for reading and taking the time!!!!byee..

In FL Studio its all about VSTi's... Before I switched to using Reason 4.0 ( and 3.0 before that), the main VSTi that I used was called Sampletank XXL with stereo sampled sounds from almost every instrument imaginable. From guitar to flute to synths to drums and so on and so forth. I also used a VSTi called Slayer2 to get a heavy metal-like guitar. However, Reason's factory sounds are pretty damn close to the real sounds the emulate, especially if you use the Combinator (an instrument with in the reason program.) Instead of using different plug-ins (VSTi's) to achieve a certain sound or vibe, reason has all of the necessary instruments built in to it and uses patches call refills to obtain more sounds, but the patches within the factory refill it comes with are pretty damn good. Then they have the Piano Refill that has some of the most true sounding pianos, all stereo-multisampled and run thru effects. Then there's the Drums refill with true acoustic samples of drums at different timbres and velocities. I could go on, but If you want that realistic sound, Go and get you some good VSTi's for FL studio, or try out reason, they have a free version (i think its free) called Reason Adapted. That'll give you a good idea of the program can do. If you like the sound and format of that program, It's pricey, but worth it, cuz all of the refills I mentioned can be downloaded for free if you purchase a legit copy and register it on the Reason Website along with a bunch more. You can also search the web for some good pre-fab loops and work with those. Big Fish Audio has some good samples and loops on CD and DVD for a reasonable price (Like $30 - 80$ depending on the how much stuff is on the disk)

Hope that helped point you in the right direction. Also if your as broke as I am, all the stuff I mentioned can be gotten via BitTorrent ( or even limewire i think) but its all bootleg and I can't tell you how to do anything like that, but it can be done.

ps... there are also free loop sites all around the internet. If you go Here people post links to fee stuff all the time. The loops aren't always royalty free, so be carefull. There are free VSTi's out there as well, but there usually not that good
