Setting up MPD24 MMC controls in Cubase

A lot of people have asked me how to setup their MPD24 MMC transport controls in Cubase. The method I used to get these going was pretty simple, and went like this...

First of all, make sure your MPD24 is plugged in (I'm using USB cable).

Start up Cubase, and go to Devices > Device Setup.

Under the Transport section, you'll see MIDI Machine Control Slave, click on that - this is where you set up your MMC capable device (in this case the MPD24).

On the MIDI Input dropdown, select USB Audio Device - if you are using the USB cable to connect your MPD24 obviously.

Also make sure the MMC Device ID is set to 1.

Hit OK/Apply to save these settings.

Thats it - you should have working MMC controls in Cubase via your MPD24 now!

Hi Matt, just wanna ask you a question, I have a Cubase SL3, How come the Midi Machine Control Slave option dont show up on my device setup ? I can only see the Time Display option and not the other one... I really want to use the transport control of my Akai mpd24 but I cant solved it... Could you help me please ? I also have the Oxygen 49 but still I cant use it also on my Cubase SL3... Any advice for it ? thanks...

matt's picture

Hi Melek... I can't remember whether I had to change any other settings to be able to see the MMC settings as pictured above... I'll take another look.

Melek's picture

ok.. thanks.. I'll be here waiting for your help...

matt's picture

Oh one thing that occured to me - make sure your MPD24 is plugged in via USB *before* starting Cubase up. Otherwise I'm pretty sure the MMC options won't be visible.

Melek's picture

So, whats that mean ? I'm gonna reinstall my Cubase SL3 ? coz my MPD24 is already plugged in via USB but I still dont have it... But one thing I know is that my Cubase is already installed before I purchased the MPD24... maybe I'm gonna reinstall it right ?

matt's picture

No I mean make sure your MPD24 is *plugged in*, before you open the Cubase program.

If you open Cubase, and only then remember to plug in the MPD24, it won't be detected by Cubase.

Melek's picture

I always connect my mpd24 on my PC... my mpd24 works well with Reason 3.0 but I dont know how to set it up with cubase... Do you use Cubase SL3 also ? my mpd24 is always plugged in my pc via USB, how come the MMC is still not visible ? sorry to bother you man but the support of Steinberg and Akai doesn't help anything...

matt's picture

Hmmm sounds like the hardware should be all ready to go...

I'm using SX3, but I don't see why SL3 shouldn't be picking it up?

I'll have to try and retrace my installation steps and see if I had to change any settings in Cubase before the MMC options showed up...

Melek's picture

Ok, thanks... I'll be here...

Hey,

Try clicking on the "+" button in the top left corner of the "Device Setup" Screen and the click on "MIDI Machine Control Slave" then do your business. :)

I have reason 3.0 & an akai
mpd24 that triggers reason perfectly and all the functions work except the
sequence (rec, rew, play) button on the akai don't trigger the sequencer to
start in reason. I spent all night (literally) up trying to follow all the
steps that akai & reason said to make it work, but no luck. I was wondering if anyone might be able to guide me in the right direction.

Brian's picture

Hi Matt,

i'm having the same problems trying to set up my Mpd 24 on Cubase.

I have cubase le.

Any pointers??

Brian's picture

Does any1 knows why my pc speakers sound distorted after 3 min of recording??

matt's picture

Hmmm not too sure Brian - how far have you got with setting that up? Do you see the options I mention above in your Cubase LE version?

Brian's picture

I tried all those step mention above, but i can't seem to find di MMC control slave in my device set up, i know in the sx3 there is a + that you need to click on in order for you to see it, but in the Le version its not there.

matt's picture

I see - so theres not even any "Transport" section in the preferences?

Brian's picture

i use the alesis version of cubase, may be thats the problem.

matt's picture

Oh do you mean its a version of Cubase that came bundled with Alesis hardware?

Rell_of_MadeYoungstas's picture

MATT I HAVE THAT SAME PROBLEM ALSO WITH CUBASE LE AND ITS STEINBERG PRODUCT .

matt's picture

Hmmm ok, so this needs to get figured out once and for all huh.

Does your Cubase LE version simply not have a "Transport" section in the Device Setup menu (as pictured above)?

Could you take a couple of screenshots from your Device Setup menu, and also the MIDI subsection of it and post the links here so I can take a look?

matt's picture

From some reading I've been doing around the net it sounds as though Cubase LE (and possibly even Cubase SL) simply don't support remote Transport control via MMC... I'm not *certain* about this, but it appears to be the case.

matt's picture

Hey just out of interest, does it make any difference if you have your MPD24 set to the Cubase preset?

Rell_of_MadeYoungstas's picture

about the cubase le preset , its not in my mpd24 . i have every preset but that one . but i did figure out how to use it in cubase le and now trying to understand how to load up sound in the 16 pads of the mpd24

matt's picture

Did you delete the Cubase preset off your MPD24? I can't remember whether its Cubase LE preset or what, but theres definitely meant to be some sort of Cubase preset in there...

In any case the MMC transport controls are apparently not supported by Cubase LE as I mentioned above.

Not sure how far you got with loading up samples, but the basic idea is that you need sampler software to load samples into, which you can then trigger via the MPD24.

NI Battery is what I use. It rocks!

Hello everybody!
I have a little different problem here. Also regarding to mpd24 and cubase sx. I´have no knowledge how to sync them! I have a really low latency firewire soundcard(motu ultralite) , the latency is something aroun 1- 2.5 millisecs i/o.
When I start recording with metronome ieverything works perfectly( i hear no latency when hitting the pads ), but when played back the recorded notes are behind..out of the tempo totally. I made sure the auto quantize is off and i´m sure i´m not playing so OFF tempo :)

so there must be sync problem! I have no ide what are the internal clokcks..timecodes etc... I tried every possible setting...i took my at least 3 hours...and i could not get a good result.
btw, my akai is connected through usb 2.0.

Any ideas:)?

matt's picture

Hi there hannesv - I think this might help :)
http://www.maketunes.com/forums/how-to-remove-midi-recording-delay-in-cu...

Let me know...

hannesv's picture

Matt, Thanks !
This was very useful. I still have something little strange with the delay(actually the notes are not delayed but they are recorded a little earlier ) BUT it still made a huge improvement in perfomance !!!!
One thing,,,I´ve lost the metronome click sound after using the timestamp option.(i made sure the metronome click is activated but still no sound).

Maybe I need to play around with SYNC setup in SX3 now... There are so many options actually. midi clock..timecode etc...this is a bit confusing.

Anyone who uses akai mpd24 what´s your "sync" setup like?
(I´ve connected the mpd24 straight to usb and the soundcard is in firewire...).

Thanks MATT and MAKETUNES!
HannesV.

It works in my SX3 but only sometimes???

Why would this be? I got the play/forward/rewind down for a day or so and now nothing happens. I see it under MMC. Can I just set it up to All MIDI Inputs since I have two USB MIDI devices?

Also, how do I setup all those faders and knobs? HOw do I get them to control the features I want in Cubase and my VSTs???

THANKS!

wrksss's picture

ok, i know this is a little late to ask but...im using cubase sx3 (new to it) & and an mpd24; everything seems to be working ok, but after im done recording and go to play it back and get a short portion of the beginning and then the sound stops...any clue to whats going on?

matt's picture

Well it doesn't sound like an MMC issue wrksss? Maybe start a new forum topic about your specific problem and we can work at that

yairhol's picture

Hi Matt,
First of all thank you for this wonderful forum.
I have the MPD24 fully working and Cubase Studio 4.1.2 fully working as well.
I followed the instructions you gave at the top of this page but I don't have the option
"MIDI Machine Control Slave" under the Transport section. How can I still use MMC with Cubase Studio 4?
Thanks.

matt's picture

Hmmm yairhol - do you have a "Transport" section under your Cubase Device Setup menu?

Hughiestyle's picture

Yo Guys....I Use Cubase Studio 4 and the MMC slave option is not available in the places sugested. Still haven't found a solution to using the transport functions on my MPD. anyone had any success.....?

matt's picture

Some versions of Cubase have limited functionality, such as the lack of MMC controls. Cubase LE is one of these, and I suspect Cubase Studio 4 could be the same?
