Hi again,
has anyone of you made any experience with self-made isolation boxes?
It´s "just" a sound-proof case where you put either your guitar/bass amp or just the speaker into so you can crank it up and mic the speaker without annoying your neighbors (or your girlfriend who´s asleep at 3 am while you´re still recording cause you just can´t let go - I know it :-).
I am about to build one and was wondering if it is sufficient to just build that case of plywood (said to be quite sound absorbing because it is multi-layered), pad it with foam and use rubber door seals.
Okay, there might still be some noise coming through, I wouldn´t mind if it isn´t too loud. All I care about is cranking my guitar amp up at least over 50%, so I can record a rather powerful guitar (or bass) sound...
Any suggestions?
Thanxx and cheerz
Julian

yeh ive made a few boxes i find mdf (dont use thinner than 18mm) to be the cheapest and most often the best material , when soundproofing u can use foam or the insulation u find in roofs but thats itchy aas hell .. u can also use silicon on the joints to add to the soundproofing, hope this helps
Thank you Ed,
hell yeah, I have stuffed out a roof with insulation material - I got the itch, hahaha...
Thanks for sharing your experience. Can you tell HOW sound-proof your boxes are?
Do they transmit any vibrations to the floor (so do I have to put them on stilts)?
Thanxx again,
Julian

i dont think u can ever stop the vibration but u can reduse it by using rubber feet on the bottom of your stands or box , they only need to be 20mm long but this helps alot if you have hard floors.
@ed
what should the thickness be with plywood? or is this approximatly the same as mdf ?
and how did you get the cables into the boxes?
should it help if i cris crossed it through the issolation?
and as a door it's probably best to take an mdf door?
damn that's alot of questions on a few lines :)

if you are using plywood you will need to buy hardwood ply which is a bit more expensive but dosent have holes underneath the surface and also dosent swell with humidity, you will need it to be 18mm 3/4 inch minimum thickness. the door can be the same material ,

Wow, thanks for the participation.
As for the holes for cables, I think Bariga´s idea will work - at least that´s what I had in mind too. The holes shouldn´t cause that much of a problem. I will put them on the back of the box though...
P.S. @ ed: checked out your showcase. I´m not into that style, but like the sounds you use on "Demon" as well as the punchy but clear kick on "Psy Traveler". Well produced, man...

ow yeah, another question popped into my head.
do you know what kind of glass i should use in case i wanted a small window.
this will probably cost a 'bit' more than withouth, but it seems handy to me...
