I got my hands on FL Studio 8 XXL a couple of days ago... Thanks to people on here (The Sole in particular... and DJ Bizzerk) I've got a handle on how this thing works... and I LOVE IT! I'll figure out how to run reason into it eventually, but here is my 1st entry for this contest, all FL, all me, all piano roll, done at work. Please tell me if my levels are on point or not, I haven't got to the house to check the levels... I have primitive speakers here. I did my best, but let me know what needs to be turned up or down, and what needs to be moved to the front or back.

FINALLY got this beat with no unwanted noises... I still have the effed up version on here so people can see what I'm talking about, but this beat has been the bane of my existence for the past week... since Wednesday at least. It's smooth and clean... The only pre-fab loops (from construction packs) is the backing synth and the piano... The backing synth was chosen because I couldn't find the right sound in a VST... The piano was added after the beat was almost done... It needed something else and I couldn't get my fingers to play a good melody... So I got a loop that sounded like I played it. Take a listen!

That's cool because I've been getting my but kicked by this track I've been working on,and in an attemt to explor my options,I had tried putting somthing else to the beat and although it did work,I ended up with two tracks in the works becuase I decided to keep the second one and put a new beat to it. There both alomst done now,but if I had entered my finished track in yesterday I would have been putting up somthing I wasn't %100 happy with.I was on a roll there for a bit putting out my best track ever with every new track but now It's getting harder and harder to beat myself!lol

Yep King Dattoli, I think the judges for the next one should try and sensitize us with the criteria used in choosing the best beat cos the way I see a jam might not be the same with the next bro. So if a standard is set say like the use of points on certain things like Intro (10 points), sound combination (10 points), sound progression (10 points), smoothness and clarity of sound (10 points), beat breaks or breakdowns (10 points), hook (10 points), bridge (10 points) etc. Then at the end of the competition, an aggregate of how the judges rated each song is displayed for all the competitors to see how well they did and where they need some improvement or more work example

I fourth it. Although I wont have time for contests now. The idea seems sound. It would be more difficult for the judges though. It would put them on the spot to show why they would chose the winners chosen, other then that they just liked it better. Part of me wonders if (especially hiphop) the judgement is based on what would be easier or more the style to sing to then the track itself. A judgement system like ThomThomp stated would lay it out systematically and disregard the vocal angle and concentrate more on the tracks themselves. Besides, there can always be a contest in the future based on the challenge of vocally adaptivity.

Hey KD you could also do the Christmas Contest idea if you want. I am not going to be able to get around to it. Just a thought. Another thought that Matt and I had discussed in the past was a 'catchy' contest. Who is the catchiest mofo out there on maketunes? That is the future contest thoughts that I was going to do. Take it and run with it whenever if you want bro.

All Nice ideas, Here is another one though. Why don't we double up the heat by say Send a beat without vocals and send the same beat again this time with vocals. This will further strengthen the beat and heat. It will also show how well the song title goes with the song's message. Then I really agree with sole. Why don't make a funky Christmas song that will be danceable in clubs. I'm trying to come out with an idea where a set of instruments will be uploaded say Drums, synths, piano, sax, guitars, sound fonts, loops, etc and all contestants must download any set of these instruments and use for their songs. In other words all must songs must be created using any set of these instruments. This will actually prove creativity and ability.

ThomThomp... The vocal idea is one of those "good on paper, bad in practice" things. Like Marxism. There are only a handful of people who do hip-hop/rap vocals. TIME$, Sole(on occasion), Giechi Dan, Abeyant, Myself (Once... but more to come, I'm a producer first, MC second), my close friend Rell (I just post his stuff on my account... Saves time), and I'm now assuming you spit as well. Not that many MC's on here... yet. So in the future, yes that would be a great contest! Now... The other idea of the instrument/drum kit idea, (That I mentioned as well) that has some real merit. Like I said, it'd be much better than just posting some loops and phrases, or a song to remix, and telling people, "Have at it!" and see what different artists takes on the same idea. We've done that to death here. It's interesting, but it stifles the creative control element. If we just said, "You must use a piano in your song, and it must be a main or accompanying melody, not just a blip here or there." or put forth the proposition "The only drum kit allowed is the 808." Anything like that. I have countless beats with the 808 and I use a piano in like... 1 out of 3 beats. The free form structure that's now in place is what I like. But we've done it 4 TIME$ now... (Sorry... I like bad puns) So I say, put some restraints on it now. But nothing too restrictive.

The collabo idea is awesome! But can we all do it? I've done a collabo here and there, but, it's a selective process. To me, it's like when you were in elementary school and it was project time. Joey's my best friend, you go be partners with Kevin" Then it's, "Kevin smells like tuna, and he picks his nose!" And then we have a sad tuna smellin', nose pickin' sad faced mofo cryin in the corner working on a project by himself, eatin' glue. So... the collabo idea would need some structuring... I like the work with a n00b idea! Again, some rules would have to be established for it to work right.

thats what I was thinking too abeyant and cap.... Well make a new forum for everybody to sign up.. Then we will assign the partners according to percieved skill level. So its as even as possible. What I said a couple posts up was that the judges team the producers up by two and not to let anybody choose their partner because it will end up very lopsided that way and would be a pointless competition. Havent talked to dattoli about it yet.
