Well, I stumbled across a few thoughts and findings and I figured what a good forum idea this would be. I haven't checked to see if it was made by anyone before me, as my sit down job as a Dell Technician has made me lazy.
Collaborations. This one word is an awesome word, and brings with it a wealth of music, but also migraines. Just recently a fellow musician and friend of mine from here, started collaborating with me and we ran into a vst error when I tried to open the project in FL. The work around was horrendous and way too time consuming for my lazy butt. The next time you are collaborating in FL and a project doesn't open right, do not give up. Just have the first artist find the annoying vst instrument and right mouse click on it and replace it with a commonly used instrument in FL. It is just that simple, yet, weirdly enough we are all blind to this obvious and simple solution. You can always have your partner email a wav or mps sample of the true vst formed section and just insert the wav in the appropriate placement on the playlist which would be occupied by the commonly FL vst. DUH! Right? Good. That is over with.
Another nice little thing I noticed is when creating a song before, I would choose a different instrument if I heard cackling. This cackling occurred no matter how low I brought down the volume. I would choose a different instrument and that would be that. Either that or I had too many instruments going at one time. I figured that I would shoot for the sky one day and laid the instruments on really thick and the cackling was as bad as ever. I went ahead and converted the FLP into a mp3 anyways. The results were astounding. NO CACKLING audio. WOW! So get used to me laying it on thick. A prime example of this is my new song PERSISTANCE. It converts over like a champ and you have an unblemished song.
Something not related to FL is the belief that the person sending music online to someone else needs to send it in true wav format. Why is this? Even I have been guilty of needing this requirement. Why not send the file in wma or mp3 and then let the receiver easily use their own software to convert it to a different format? In this way collaborational traffic will not be an all day event. What about you? Do you have any production tips? Lord knows I can use all the help I can get, as FL is the only tool I use anymore. I am sure I am not the only one.

Nice tips. Personally I prefer wav format because it is lossless, but you if the end result is going to be a mp3 file online (as oppose to a cd) then mp3s are sufficient.
Regarding cackling or 'popping' this is most likely a buffer-underrun caused by overloading your soundcard at one time, this can usually be fixed by raising the 'buffer size'.

I agree with illusivemind....Ive ran into that same issue with FL Studio, with the pops...
I raised the buffer size and they went away.
Now I use ASIO4all to control this issue.
Here is the web site to check out if you dont have it....
http://www.asio4all.com/
They have a few sections of FAQ's to help out as well.
I have some HOT VST's loaded here.....

I'll add somemore later...Stay Tuned!
Hope this helps!
EmergeX.....
ASIO messes up my Adobe Audition. If I could set each program individually it would be cool.. but I am using integrate audio that is 7.1 now. So what I need to know is how do you change the buffer size in FL. You guys perked my interest.
Also...once a wav is changed in format to mp3 or what have you and it then gets converted back to wav... is there something lost? Is the quality worse?
My Showcase
I will check out the vsts.. thanx for the tip E X
My Showcase
Yeah that's right, encoding a wav into an mp3 compresses the audio (makes it smaller) by ditching parts of the audio information.
Format like WAV and FLAC are known as lossless because they keep all the audio data.
Whereas MP3 & WMA are lossy.

I didn't know that bro. There is still much to learn. I appreciate all your help bro. How do you specify the buffer amount in FL?
My Showcase
Options > Audio Settings > Buffer Length
Better sound cards will have faster buffers, so also check to see you have the correct sound card selected.

Yeah I think Sole mentioned he was using the onboard integrated 7.1 audio - which will likely be really struggling with VSTs etc... as the others have mentioned increasing the buffer can help alleviate those popping sounds etc, but with some programs can cause latency issues if you're trying to record midi tracks with VSTs over the top. Not sure how FLstudio will react as far as latency goes.
And yup Illusive is dead right about the loss of data when you encode original audio data into a compressed format such as MP3. Always a good idea to work with WAV samples rather than MP3 samples where possible, and keep WAV originals of your songs too (as well as track source files such as FLP etc) - just burn a DVD of them every so often if you're running out of space.
Speaking of backing things up - if you guys want an easy automated online backup site to use, check out my post about Mozy!
Thanks and thanks and thanks to both of you guys. I wont run out of space though now. I have a 325 gig hdd. Yea!
I still back up originals unless I EFF up.

I figured out that in the Options/Audio settings theres a buffer size slider for direct sound buffer length. I deactivated all options and made my buffer under 3000 samples. Now I get no clicks,no pops no underruns. Some huge vst engines like Korg Legacy Cell don't Perform well in this envir. But most do.Also Heavy effects,as I'm sure you know, will also slow you. If you got any more Questions let me know. That's how I got rid of latency on my pc
Thanks for the info partner.

When your PC is 'under load' and chuggin 'n poppin away, go to
Tools > Macros > Switch Smart Disable for FX
or something like that. :oD

Hey Sole
I think you wanted to know how I make the vocals tune in as I did with most of our SOAP songs
So I'll simply post it here. In this example I will lay the effect on a SYTRUS pattern.
1. The Sytrus pattern you want to lay the effect on is PATTERN 1 in our example. It is 4 bars long.
2. Assign the SYTRUS vst the 1st effect pattern in the mixer.
3. Insert the FRUITY FAST LP or the FRUITY FILTER in the 1st effect pattern in the mixer.
(We only need to arrange the cutoff so you can use both)
4. Select pattern 2 (In the pattern window). You can of course choose any of the patterns, just be sure not to choose the same as the SYTRUS one.
5. Open the FRUITY FAST LP (or the FRUITY FILTER)
6. Right click on the CUTOFF controll
7. select EDIT EVENTS
8. Now hold the right mouse button and make a line from the lower left corner to the upper right, which should be 4 bars from the beginning)
9. Insert the pattern 2. You will see it is 4 bars long (Or however long you made it)
If these two patterns play at the same time, the cutoff os the SYTRUS will change while playing.
OF COURSE THIS EFFECT WORKS WITH ALL OTHER CONTROLS TOO!!!
THanks guys, I will have to check that out P!t. My Showcase
ok bro
let me know if this is what you wanted
I am going to try these steps you posted P!t but first I gotta get some musical incantations done. I appreciate you adding info to the forum bro. Maybe we can get this thing big and help out alot of musicians, yeah?
My Showcase
yeah sure!
I hope so

Here a tip:
If you right click some knob, let's say the volume of a particular channel and select "Edit Automation" and automation data you enter will be stored in the current pattern you have selected.
If you right click the volume know and select "Create Automation Clip" it will appear as an an editable block in the playlist editor.
It makes the automation easier to visualise and manage but I don't recommend this for precision operations because you don't have as much precise control from the playlist editor.

Oh an here's a very important tip that changed my whole world when I found it.
You will find on a lot of VSTi's and FX you aren't able to right click a control (like the Cut Off etc.) and click edit automation.
That doesn't necessarily mean the feature can't be automated.
Click on an empty pattern, click record and then play, whilst the pattern is playing twiddle the control you want to automate.
Now unclick the record button and press play, if the automation was recorded you'll see the know move about.
Then in the left pane goto (I think, from memory)
Current Project > Automation > Pattern 1 >
and you'll see automation data you can right click it and edit it all you like.

This is another way to find variables on the VST to edit, but sometimes it's hard to know which ones they correlate to, so in that case use my method above. :D

Another time saver when I realised it.
If you're like me and have a lot of old flp files lying around which were made when your directory structure was radically different, then you're mostly gonna come up with empty red blocks where your samples used to be.
If you also have a large hard drive like I do, FL will sit there looking for crash.wav for some time.
Just press 'Escape' and it will skip this.

Thank you much brother. You have contributed much to this forum and I will try some of the steps out. I am curious about the automation more. Why is it good. THis stuff is over my head and I never look at none of the stuff. Is there a FL for dummies? LOL! Seriously though... the automation. Can you give me a break down explanation of why it is cool before I try it?
Click here to view a current automation ignorant bastard.
Sure thing brother,
Automation allows you to control pretty much everything in your track. Volume Fad In, Fad Out, FX Fade in, FX Mute etc.
This clip is a little advanced, (I've never used the peak controller for example) but it demonstrates the some of the power of automation.

This One, called "Quick Mix in FL Studio" is a good one for beginners.

for those with Fl studio 5 or less the "Smart disable" feature does not appear....But when you drop a fx channel into the mixer the arrow to the left of it gives you the power to "smart disable".
