try this at home

Sometimes impatience pays off. I was attempting to put down a quick vocal track and decided against walking into my treated closet with headphones and the whole deal. Instead I just turned my monitors up playing the track and me live and ripped away sitting 3 feet away with the mich in my hand. The result I got was a natural live quality sound like a whole band was standing behind me. Of course I picked up tons of the track but to my surprise there was hardly any "white noise or line noise" Just natural reverb from the room which I layered on to the real tracks as an overall mix track or pilot. For the first time I got to see the effects of what a well treated room can offer. Dont try this at home if your a week vocalist or need a lot of FX. Garage bands looking for a demo fire away. Check out the result "Complex".

Nice tip there - how do you find your treated closet normally? Being mainly an electronic instrumental musician I don't have much experience with vocal recording, but I've heard some people say that a closet, even when acoustically treated, is too small an area for vocal recording? Others seem to have no problem with it however - I guess its all relative.

It would maybe sound more ambient but wouldn't that mess with the separation?

matt's picture

Yeah I'd guess the separation would be all shot to hell, but sounds as though it was more of a "one off live" type recording he was going for that time?

I guess that depends how you read it.

What i got was that he did so out of impatience but ok i admit i have a reading comprehension problem big time, LOL!

I am also horrible with written articulation on post so if i say something off the wall please realize it is either my ignorance or it didn't come out right.

You know like my president.
LOL!!!!

matt's picture

Hey yeah no worries, it does actually seem that it was initially out of impatience, but then liked the resulting effect. But yeah you're right that it would kind of limit what you could do with the tracks at a later date if you were wanting to alter/master them differently etc.

And yes, yes your president certainly is known for that! lol

Fourth Dimension's picture

Yes he is world famous for it , without getting political I must say he is really good at it.
I love his comment about us and the fish peacefully coexisting. LOL!

Hehe agreed - and politics do have an age old ability to polarize and disrupt communities, so fine by me if we stick to our tunes :)

Oh Absolutely Matt , i wouldn't dream of it here there are places for that and this is not that place , for one thing music and talent knows no boundaries and is completely unbiased regardless of politics or anything else.

Did that come out right?

I would suggest against religion here as well , though what do you do about religious songs and political songs?
Tough questions eh?

Never mind :)

matt's picture

Yep you got it. Some people obviously like to bring their religion into their music, which i don't have a problem with as long as its not beating "non-believers" about the head with it :)

I agree whole heartedly. everyone has a right to their own opinion, but as dimension said there is a time and place for that. Music hgas the power to reach people of differing views without causing too much grief. Sober...

Right you are Sober and besides if i said who and what i am i would be under attack from 50 directions.

let's just keep it musical here , i mean like if someone has a religious song or a political song i am fine with it , i would even find it interesting but would treat it more from a technical and commercial aspect then anything else

indeed. its the wiser way to be. Stay happy :)Sober...

I am glad you guys are cool about religious songs, because you see, I have this project I am working on....

Oh Hey Joe? I did that back in the day with the whole closet thing! There is a problem like Matt said about wanting to use the vocals later. It messes that up. Also there is no airflow. No air condition in my case. And I sing sooo loud, the energy gets burnt and the sweat starts to drip into my eyes and before you know it I am stevie wonder.

Yeah man each to their own I say :)

Oh I think he usually used the vocal closet for his vocals, but this time he didn't use it, and his vocal recording got a bunch of background instrument audio mixed in with it...

Mind you what you're describing in regards to the overheating and lack of air could be an issue too! lol

LOL! That is funny about Stevie wonder.

Well yeah no problem , religious music is a form of music and has an interesting history and just as interesting is that it is unlimited to style nowadays and i must add internationally a pretty big commercial market .

Sole... it dosnt matter what kind of song it is ... u cant pass comment unless you have heard it first. religion politics etc, whatever the subject... if it rocks ur boat then it rocks ur boat. Sober...

Sole... forgot to put my smiley face in there, peace man.. Sober...

:o] LOL! It's all good Sober.

Matt I did record where it was coming over the speakers too and caught alot of track instrumental in the process. It can work for a song but like you said, it messes it up where you can't reuse the vox in the future. Hey man! I might not be able to sing forever, I could turn into Jim Morrison! Gotta have my shit backed up for that rainy day in the future! Hopefully FAR into the future mind you!

PS On a side not I was thinking about doing a track the opposite of a Christian song. Something really evil sounding. Lyrics indistinguishable and sounding like it is sung by the devil himself!

We shouldn't be limited right guys??

Sounds good sole... a bit of seriously industrial balckness would be good if ur up for it... Sober...

Being a Dancehall style DeeJay or "MC", i try to stick to how it was recorded in the 70's/early 80's. A live dancehall/party setting, run the instrumental and let the lyrics flow. No booth, very little studio effects and about 3 tracks to record the vocals. Besides a lecture..thats about as basic as vocal recording gets. Its good to see other people getting a good vibe from it....Respect
