Wassup maketunes, I am about to invest in a midi controller and I wanted to get your opinions on which controller would be a good investment. I will be using it to controll sonar and reason and also the sounds on my fantom.

Hey bro, I know Axiom is a great company. But, it's more of a matter of opinion. You can check out reviews on MIDI controllers on emusician.com
Also, if you google it I'm sure you'll find reviews on the best controllers that suit your needs. Hopefully this helps you bro. I have a standard Yamaha DGX-220 MIDI controller/synthesizer that works great for me.

Hey, also you'll want to consider how many keys will suit you best. I know some people prefer to use a very compact keyboard, as they usually work in a tight range of notes when creating melodies etc. But keep in mind, if you prefer to have a wide range of octaves at your disposal when trying out certain sounds to create melodies that you might prefer more keys, without having to switch between octaves on a compact midi controller. Also good to check out whether the controller you're considering is mapped out for your favorite software.
Good point, Matt. I didn't even think of mentioning that part. I prefer having more keys personally.

My question is what's your price range. Korg makes the best one out there right now, IMHO... but its anywhere between 400-600 bucks It syncs up to Reason, Cubase, ProTools, FL Studio... all of the standards... completely and automatically. No need to MIDI learn again. An ex-friend (I say ex friend because he tried to shoot and kill my best friend, the one and only Rell... then when he realized he still had blanks in the clip, he pistol whipped him... to boot it was his bro in law... eff'ed up, right?)he has this... love the thing. Wish i could afford one! Check it out here: http://keyboards-midi.musiciansfriend.com/product/Korg-KONTROL49-49Key-M...

Wait... it does need to be MIDI assigned for some VSTi appz, but it's so damn easy with this thing. I just have a basic M-Audio Keystation 49e... works for me!

I had one of those and sold it, on ebay....i hate i did that. If u look at my pics you will see it in the background. I am bidding on an axiom 49 on ebay now.
man if you really wanna be cheap, as far as just using a keyboard as a controller, like i did, just get an old keyboard, make sure it has midi out(important!), and grab a midi to usb cable and you're good to go!
well its not the cheapest way, but it's cheaper than buying a whole new keyboard that starts at least at $100(average estimate)
so here's the one i have in my setup: http://www.m-audio.com/products/en_us/Uno.html
i paid $40 for it at guitar center, and i ONLY paid that $40 because I wanted a reliable product, which m-audio is good for, so there it is..
hope that helped bro!

The M-Audio Keystation 49e, like I have, is only 90 bucks (80 on sale) at both Guitar Center AND Best Buy... that's right I said Best Buy... Actually now that I've mentioned them, they're getting into the musical equipment biz... as in, they'll be retrofitting there stores to carry all the same stuff as guitar center. The one near me already has some stuff. mixers, keyboards, microphones... buncha stuff. Toogood's right though. You can probably find a cheap keyboard with midi out at a thrift store, goodwill or the right pawn shop for like 20-40 bucks then the MIDI to USB box is about 20. 30 bucks cheaper than a new one, but I'd still get the real deal if I was you.

I went to the guitar center today and played wit da mpd49 and its nice and also that new motif...I think I might just wait it out and get that new motif rack. Also akai has some new mpc like beat machine and its really nice and affordable. I think going in there was the wrong thing for me to do.
