What studio monitors do you use in your home studio?

Curious as to what studio monitors you guys are using in your home studio?

I've run krk rp8's for a couple of years now, and find them great - even for everyday music listening use (once low end is turned up at mixer).

What monitors do you use at the moment? Any studio monitors you'd recommend?

I´m using JBL Control 1. Small, but with a really straight sound.
However, I still check my mixes on various stereo units and my car radio...*g*

all u gotta do is rock

Mmm always crucial to check out tracks on a wide range of stereos, car audio, portable music devices etc - to get that overall picture.

Anyone else got some studio monitor experiences to share?

Hi
I use Behringer Thruth B2030A...Like 'em a lot
Good quality for price

The Behringer Truth monitors were what I was orginally looking at before deciding on the KRKs - they're meant to be good value too.

ya know, I never really thought about monitors for recording. I use headphones. I don't want the mic to pick up the output from the monitors. I guess I just don't know enuff about that stuff. My setup is pretty simple but, I did spend a few bucks in certain areas.

How do you use a montor and not have it interfer with the microphone?

matt's picture

Guess that's not such an issue for me, as I don't do a lot of microphone recording... but you're right, people recording with microphones will generally have to isolate recording / playback areas (think recording booth). Headphones are ideal for most people in your recording situation.

I use Rokit powered 5 monitors.
they are great I have used them for a couple of years now, they look cool, they sound great.
Oh and in response to GTeed
you would turn down your monitor speakers to -0 and then start recording with your headphones. Monitor speakers, are for the engineer to be listening to in the other room. But in your case you are the engineer, and you probably record in the same room as your computer...... unless you have incredibly long arms to press record. lol. anyways
Ya the monitors are excelent for mixing on, because you can become sort of sheltered in tone, if you keep the headphones on too long. I recomend using both.
Oh so my monitors were like 150 each and I love em. so check em out.

nice m8 tannoys are very good quality man.
i have a set of B AND W's i series. ferrous fluid cooled tweeters etc. old but sweet sounding box's

My moniters are lacking, I have a Sony 3 disc changer at home that I hook up to via the aux in. I also have some entertainment purpose stereo speakers I used to use, but had to move because I think they catalized my hard drive failure. My 2nd opinion sound check is conducted on my car stereo system.... Which works nicely with an IPod shuffle (my ever rewritable CDR), or the aux out on my laptop. Talk about some improvising, but I try to do my mixing to satisfy all these different monitering set ups.

You can make it happen with only a set of IPod earphones if that's what you gotta do... Just will it, and make it work.

I've just got headphones and my home theater speakers+sub atm, but I wanna get some KRK RP8's maybe in a few months.

It's just about the last thing on my home studio 'to do list'.

I use the original Alesis Monitor One's. I love em'.
Its the nice warm sound I like. Has anyone heard the new Monitor One's. It black and has shielded magnets?

matt's picture

Nah haven't heard the Monitor Ones eh. Heard good things?

I use ? pair of M-Audio BX5a with BX10S sub. Well, the reference pair is full of truth but i feel a little shortage of attack in the sub. Maybe that's all 'bout the positioning in the room. However, subwoofer have a pedal to switch it off with the crossfader, so that is very useful for me. Some time ago I used another reference pair - BX5 without the sub in reflect-isolated room. And you know that was very good pair! Working with the sub needs to get accustomed first.

Then I run it to my car stocked full of lanzar subs and amps, pioneer 3 ways and a sony xpold deck. I bought some M-Audio BX5a monitors. They allow me to really hear my recording clean and help ALOT in the production. Glad I finally got some. I don't have a sub though. I have already redone a few of my songs.......(still need to update them here.....) :D

i also bump the m audio bx5 series...well worth it

Sixx's picture

I still use my alesis m1 active monitors...they do but still my bass isn't right when i take it to another system.

Amittai's picture

Sixx, your bass problem is probably due to a poorly treated room, not your speakers. Here's a link to help explain. They've got great solutions for bass problems as far as translating accurately between different systems, cars, rooms, etc. Hit up the links at the top and after several hours you'll be an acoustics pro! Have fun, hope you enjoy math.

I say it like this...if you dont have a well treated room with great moniters, you might as well E.Q using Headphones(Sony PRO's)....because you will always get false "readings"....I know it sounds GREAT on your moniters but put some headphones on and you'll here another "story"
