i got one a few months ago and stiiiiill can't get it to work, even with alllll this help from tha wonderful Internet!
basically, tha problem is i plug it into my laptop (by USB) and it starts installing, but then THIS happens:

tha progress bar is full, and it's apparently installing "ks.sys" and it's not frozen or anything (papers keep flying between those two folders) but yet it will remain like this forever or until i end its process in task manager. and naturally it doesn't work after that.
i know there's something about updating its firmware, but from what i understand that could be a bit risky 'cuz i'd need to first delete it, and since it doesn't seem to be properly installed, i dunno if i'd be able to send it tha new OS downloaded from Akai's site.
of course, y'know i've got Windows XP Service Pack 2 and all of that and i even did some extra Windows Updates that weren't under "priority." i'm reluctant to just re-install Windows because A) i don't know where my disc is so i'll have to use a less legal one, and B) i have a lot of programs that i don't wanna mess with re-installing, which also brings up another question - if i just backed up my Program Files folder and pasted it back after a re-install, how successful would that be?
thanks!

Well thats a new one.... hmmm just out of interest, how long have you left it "trying" to install the ks.sys file?
What if you don't let the windows wizard try and install everything? Its been ages since I first installed my mpd24, and I can't remember exactly the process I took, but as a matter of course I pretty much never allow windows wizards to do anything - because it always seems to muck it up.
By following the installation instructions booklet/pdf that came with your mpd24, are you able to install that way, without relying on any windows hardware installation wizards?
pretty much all that happens is it starts searching for software, i'm like okay whatever, then it asks me if i want to continue because its drivers aren't signed or something, and i'm like okay sure. then it takes a couple seconds installing some drivers, and then gets stuck on ks.sys, which i've left overnight before.
as i recall, its instruction booklet wasn't very helpful, but i'll check it again tomorrow.
Ah right gotcha. Right at the start before it starts searching for software, does it give you any options, before it continues with the "drivers aren't signed etc" and then attempted installation?
oh yeah, it does go ahead with that "Install the software automatically" or "Install from a list or specified location" dialog. Akai's Operator Manual really says nothing about installation, except that it is "class-compliant so no driver installation is necessary."
yesterday i talked to a guy at tha store i bought it from, and he said some people installed tha drivers for Korg's Padkontrol and got their MPD24 working with them...i downloaded and installed them, so what else would i hafta do in that scenario?
Really? Thats news to me... if you end up trying that, let me know if that works eh. It seems a bit hit and miss, having to install another devices drivers to get it working. I don't know of anyone having to do that before.
I thought that whole thing about it being class compliant, and not needing driver installed would mean it would simply work once it was plugged in.... then if using with Reason etc, the extra files would need to be copied into the appropriate folders etc. But yeah I can't recall exactly what I had to do originally. I'm pretty sure it was very straight forward in my case, and I'm using XP SP1
Maybe try using it with Reason without installing anything. Just plug it in. If an installation dialogue comes up try to cancel out of it or something and just go into Reason instead. In Reason, go to Reason >Preferences and then select Keyboards and Control Surfaces from the drop down menu. Then try to "add" the Akai MPD24 to be used with Reason. If you have Reason 4.0, the MPD 24 should be in the list under Manufacturer: Akai.
I don't think you should have to install anything. If I remember correctly, this is all that should need to be done.
Stick with it man! I swear, every time I get something new for the studio it drives me insane trying to figure out how to make it work! Sometimes it takes days before I realize what's going on, so hang in there dude... If you get frustrated just go outside and break shit (away from the computer!!!!!).
Hey, sorry... I assumed you were using Reason because I thought you mentioned that somewhere up there... But it was actually Matt's comment so... If your not in Reason, you should be able to do the same thing with whatever software you're using. What program do you have by the way?
eigh. so yeah, i just tried messing around with it some more, still to no avail. i tried running it without installing anything, didn't work. i installed tha drivers for Korg's Padkontrol but don't know what else to do with that. basically what's happening is it's installed, but not working as a MIDI device i guess? well here's some shots of my MPD24's entry in Device Manager..

k that last one i used some MS Paint trickery to show all tha drivers in one image. also, i am still using Windows, just with a shell replacement - that's why my windows look soo much cooler.
it seems like all should be in order, except for that CAMFLTR driver which isn't digitally signed. i think it's from my Samsung camcorder.. i tried deleting it and then re-installing my MPD24, and it actually didn't get stuck on ks.sys, but it did fail installation because “A service installation section in the INF is invalid.†so i put CAMFLTR back and now it's all (not) working like it was before. apparently MPD24 uses CAMFLTR as a "Device Lower Filter." in my searches i found this thread. i know that Logitech problem has come up in regards to MPD24 before, but i've never had one...could my Samsung Camcorder be causing a similar disagreement?
Looks like you need to be looking in the "MIDI Devices and Instruments" control panel... In your second image down I saw something about that. All the places you seem to be looking are for "audio", the MPD 24 doesn't send audio, it sends "midi data."
The MPD 24 is a "MIDI Device", not an "Audio Device." There is a huge difference.
Hope this helps... I know it sucks to wait and troubleshoot.
Though either way, it just doesn't seem to want to install in the first place on Trevs system...
Aside from the logitech webcam USB issue, and another one with the razer mouse, I think everyone elses install has eventually been successful. I can't think whats stopping it in this case.... maybe the windows install is just busted? I know my last windows installation got to the point where it was so many years old, and had had so many programs installed and uninstalled on it, that it freaked out constantly, doing even simple tasks... had to reinstall in the end, and everything was all good after that
Did you have anything hooked up in your usb ports while you were installing it? Thats messed up installations for me before. If you did reinstall the drivers without anything plugged in to any of your usb ports. After your done plug in the mpd and see if it works. Don't know if you already tried that
