Hello,
I've read numerous posts about the MPD24 having USB/MIDI/ and software issues. I, regretfully, chose to ignore these posts, and purchased from Musicians Friend anyway. Well, the unit arrived today. I plugged it (tried all my USB ports) into my new Dell Vostro 2.4 ghz dual core PC (Windows XP, SP2) and Windows found the hardware, and was able to identify it as the Akai MPD24. However, Windows wasn't able to find a driver to fully install the device, thus showing the MPD24 as "Not functioning" and "Driver not installed". I searched the software disks, akaipro.com, and even the japanese version akai-pro.jp, to no success. There's not a driver to be found.
Here's the funny thing. If i plug it into my older (2004ish) Centrino laptop (I know, use the laptop. But it's not going to be at the studio) (Windows XP, SP2) and Windows finds and installs it immediately. It identifies it as the Akai MPD24, however it installs it as "USB Audio Device", and works in FL Studio and Reason as such. It works fine with the USB Audio Device title. I'm able to use it as a midi controller perfectly, and it's also shown in the Sounds and Audio devices menu.
Please help me out here. I'm at my wit's end with this thing. It's gotta be something on my Studio PC's set up. I just got it brand new 2 weeks ago from DELL. I don't have it hooked up to the internet or to a LAN connection. I don't have any web-cameras running. I'm only running a USB Keyboard/Mouse and an M-Box (which is installed on the laptop as well).
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Or any contact information for who to write to/call. Thank you guys, truly!

Have you got, or had, Logitech USB webcam installed? Thats the most common cause of malfunctioning USB ports that our many MPD24 visitors have had... oh I just reread your post, and you don't currently have any web cams installed.
Even if that PC used to have one connected however, that will still have infested your system with Logitech nasties. Any possibility of this?
Wow, thanks for the quick response. That's really awesome of you. Yeah, I made sure to do heavy research before posting this. No web-cams have ever been installed in the 2 weeks that I've had ownership of the PC. Maybe some of the guys at Dell were doing MySpace video podcasts before they shipped it. Haha :)
The laptop (that IS working with the MPC) used to have a Logitech wireless keyboard hooked up to it, but no longer.
As I don't see anybody having this same problem (without the Logitech resolution), I'm afraid I'm going to try to have to contact Akai. Do you know if they have a phone-walkthrough tech support department? I haven't had the chance to send in that registration card included in the box (as I just got the unit today). Will this prevent me from getting support?
*MPD, not MPC. Sorry.
No problem, I like to help get things sorted if I can - no one likes studio down time :)
Ok good that we can rule out the logitech web cam thing.
You know I'm not sure whether they do have phone support walk through available, does it mention anything like that on the documents you got in the box? I have no idea where all my MPD24 documents are - never needed them thankfully.
Of course if any of these are local numbers for you, you might like to try ringing AkaiPro to see what they say too? They might be able to give you a tollfree helpline number?
https://www.akaipro.com/contact/index.php
Or alternatively, there is the web product/customer registration part of AkaiPro.com - possibly that might open up further Akai online support options?
https://www.akaipro.com/account/index.php
Let me know if you have any luck with those, if you try them. I'd like to know more about the support side of Akai so as to know what to suggest to future MPD24 visitors also
I appreciate it, thoroughly. I registered online, and sent a e-mail to the tech support department. We'll see what happens. Again, thanks.
Here's a few of the e-mail transcripts between me, and Justin from Tech Support. He's been really great to work with, and responsive.

Subject: RE: Ask A Question
Hello Shawn,
Since you mentioned this is a new computer, it may not have all of the
proper updates on it to detect the MPD24. The MPD24 runs off the built in
Windows USB Audio drivers. I would recommend going to www.windowsupdate.com
and download all of the pending updates using the 'Custom' option. The
'Express' option may not catch all of the updates.

Justin,
Great idea! Since I use this PC strictly for studio applications, I had
never hooked up an internet connection to it. I did so, and followed your
instructions. I chose the custom install options and about 37 windows
updates were applied. I rebooted my PC after installation, and nothing. Same
problem. I am grateful for the heads up on the windows update though. Please
let me know if you have any other steps, files, or reccomendations. I'd
really be appreciative if we got this working. On the other hand, I have to
act quickly, I've only got 14 days to return this to Guitar Center (should
it not ever connect). Also, please see enclosed JPG. It's a screenshot of
the error message I'm getting.
As always,
Your help is greatly appreciated Justin.

Hi Shawn,
I couldn't see too well from the picture but it looks like there is a yellow
'?' in the Windows Device Manager. Just to double check have you ever
attached a Logitech camera to the computer? Its drivers can conflict with
the USB Audio codec. I have attached a fix for this as well as a USB
connection troubleshooting guide.

He attatched 3 files: midi_fix.zip; Logitech_Camera_Fix_Instructions.pdf;Troubleshooting_USB_Connection_Issues.pdf
After reading through, and installing them. No such luck. :(
Good to hear that Akai tech support was quick in getting back to you on that, but it does seem to be turning into a bit of a mystery as to whats causing this problem for you! Its bugging me, so I can only imagine how frustrating you must be finding it!!
Presumably that yellow alert in your windows device manager must be the half-installed mpd24?
Indeed. I've never been the "only person" to encounter a problem with hardware. We've all had our share of hiccups in different hardware/software installations. Usually a quick google search, and a forum browse presents a fix or a walk through. This is the first time that I am the guinea, pig so to speak.
Got it fixed. After days of deliberation, I inserted my Windows install CD. I didn't do a clean install. I didn't lose any programs or settings. I just did a "Repair/Upgrade" install. It apparently fixed everything!
Ah good to hear that its working now. Windows install must have become a bit broken, as is often the case over time...
