Musical Talents

Guitar, some keyboard (enough to play some basic chord structures) and sound engineering.

Musical Background

Barbershoppe is an electronic/ lounge/ acid-jazz collaboration between some full- and part time musicians in Johannesburg, South Africa. A true labour of love, the guys sadly only write and record on infrequent occasions due to other full-time commitments.

Francois van Dyk paid his dues as a bass player and guitarist in the Esselen Street days of Sunnyside Pretoria in the 1990’s. He has evolved from hard rock to blues to jazz to electronic - gaining lots of experience in writing, recording and producing in the process, even discovering a keyboard chord or two. Although the realities of a day job depress him, he stays creatively involved with several groups and musical projects.

Cornel Smit was barely 15 when he and Francois played in their first band together. Even though it was a cover band playing Elvis hits in the small platteland gold-mining town of Barberton, they took their first steps in discovering a world of music – having not ever seen another band live up to that stage. Now an expert in graphic design, Cornel runs a small home-recording studio in his free-time, producing and recording tracks for various bands and music projects, including writing new material for Barbershoppe.

Sean, son of famed jazz guitarist Johnny Fourie, has been schooled in music theory since he could walk. Playing keyboards in many well-known South African groups, writing chart topping tracks and writing scores for hit TV shows are just a few of his accomplishments. He features on many current releases as guest or session keyboardist. Sean has also produced the Cafe Melvern project, collaborating with some great artist and producers, including Johnny Fourie (guitar), Marcus Wyatt (trumpet) and Brendan Leroux (ex. Evergreen) doing production as well.

Marco Cannata, the newest Barbershoppe addition, is a well known DJ on the Johannesburg club scene. Spinning vinyl at all the current hot-spots, he brings a new upbeat dynamic to the group.
