Some college level theory, history, counterpoint, performance and ear training.

Musical Goals

There are no less than five things which all the nations of the world have held in common since the epoch of modern man. The first is a belief in some higher power, superior being or pantheon. The second is a spoken language; a means in which to communicate with one another. Third is tools or weapons utilized in forage, hunting, defense or conquest. Fourth is some form of intoxicating substance be it herb or drink and used spiritually or for recreation. Fifth and quite probably of greatest import is the arts: music, dance, stories and images of things either tangible or not. The arts encompass nearly every aspect of our daily lives. We are surrounded and often bombarded by them, usually in conjunction with one or more of the afore mentioned humanities. How are we as artists to cope in this world of mass-marketed hyper-stimulation?

It is only through emulation of those whom we most admire that we can ever hope to achieve a voice of our own. This holds true for both the writer and for the poet, for the painter and the sculptor, for the thespian, the dancer, the composer and the musician. When we learn to recognize and champion in ourselves those intrinsic qualities, such as courage and perseverance in the face of ridicule, and the insatiable desire to take what is known and make it new in the eyes of the world, it is then and only then that we may begin to rise from mere mimicry into the coveted realm of individuality. Imitation in itself is not a bad thing for it is how we all learn. But it must, by its very nature, lead to something more profound; it must lead to something unique and inspired.

The path you must take will be fraught with travail. Do not fear for if you call upon the vast wealth of knowledge prescribed by your fellow artists, both contemporary and deceased, you may rest assured that you will find your way. There will be times when all your efforts will seem to be for naught and you feel as though nothing you do is worth a damn. You may even feel like giving up. I must advise against this. Surely Mozart, Da Vinci and even Shakespeare had days in which they considered dropping the tools of his respective trade and simply turning away. Yet they did not. Imagine what a bleak and dreary world it would be if such transgressions had come to pass. You must learn from your mistakes and theirs alike.

A few words of advice, wrought in the forge of antiquity:

Carpe diem. Seize the day and make the most of it. If you want it then you must make it so. Walk tall. Keep your head held high and you breast proudly exposed to the arrows of all those who would see you fall. They cannot hurt you. Haste makes waste. Never bow down and never give in to mediocrity just because it is easy. Easy is not the path to greatness but to fame, popularity and discontent rather than respect, reverence and gratitude. Take no prisoners and never say die. Under no circumstances must you ever give up. You will live in shame and regret all the rest of your days. And always remember, contradictory though it may sound, that no great work of art is ever complete but only abandoned.

Now go find your muse, your inspiration, and never let it go.
